Sleeping pills while pregnant

Not looking for medical advice, just for personal experiences:

I have had horrid, horrid insomnia for most of my life. The severity comes and goes, but it's always there. I took some form of sleeping pill almost every night before I got pregnant, and although I tried to stop once I found out I was pregnant, I haven't been able to completely stop.

My normal routine was to take 2-3 benedryls most nights. If that doesn't work (and usually it doesn't) then I'd take 1/2 an ambien. That almost always worked, although sometimes (very occasionally) I'd have to take the other half as well. On very rare occasions, when things were REALLY bad, I'd take 1/2- 1 mg. of xanax.

So, now I'm pregnant. The xanax is out, which is fine because that was only a worst-case scenario thing anyhow. But the ambien and benedryl are still on. I simply can't sleep well without any aids. I'm sure that my years of use has made me somewhat dependent on the sleeping aids, but...still, here I am. This is my first pregnancy. Do any of you other mamas take now or have taken sleeping aids while pregnant? If so, what did you take and did it turn out ok? Do yall know what the safest remedies are?

(p.s. please don't tell me how you won't take anything when you're pregnant and that that's the only way to go. Please....I am aware of this already and unfortunately I'm wayyyy past that point.)

My doctor actually prescribed me (because its cheaper on my insurance) Tylenol Simply Sleep (the same medicine as benedryl) because I could not sleep at all towards the end with DS.

It worked, and I found no ill effects.

I also used Sleepy Time Tea with a bit of honey in it pre-bed as well, which certainly didn't hurt any either.

And a nice warm (not hot) bath with some lavender bath salts pre-bed helped a lot too!

Of course, I still needed the pills as well, the other things just helped me relax enough to let the pills do their job.

My doctor said the ingredient in Tylenol PM was fine. Also, Unisom + B6 is actually often recommended to help with morning sickness (I took it myself), so that should be fine too.

Sleepy time tea was rec. to me, and although I would drink it I am not sure if it did anything.

Midwives have rec. Unisom to me for both pregnancies. As a somewhat insomnias that has had trouble with sleep for most of my life, Unisom does not knowck me out or guarantee a good nights sleep. It tends to help me fall asleep.

I did take tylenol pm a few times when pregnant with dd. I am often awake in the middle of the night! I feel for you--it is no fun.

FWIW simply sleep is tylenol pm without the added pain reliever that you probably dont need.

Otis

Hello fellow insomniac!

When I was pregnant I called The Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS) about the medications I was taking. They were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. And free! I love them!

Check them out: http://www.otispregnancy.org/hm/ or 1-866-626-6847.

Also, I was told that Ambien is fine.

Don't feel guilty, sleep is very important during pregnancy! I take unisom now and then and at the end of my first pregnancy my midwife prescribed something stronger because I wasn't sleeping at all. I actually gave birth on three sleeping pills without any discernible effect!

Pretty sure that Benadryl is safe.

benadryl and ambien are both safe. I can't take benadryl, because of other issues, but I do take ambien sometimes.

The only thing I would caution you about it cosleeping in the same bed once the baby is born. You shouldn't do it if you're using sleeping pills. But a sidecarred crib or a cosleeper is fine. Also, you'll want to have someone look up both benadryl and ambien in Hale's to make sure that using them is okay for breastfeeding.

OTOH, the only time in the last 2 decades that I've not suffered insomnia was when my daughter was nursing, so you may find that you have some relief then.

I know that panicky feeling when I can't sleep and the psychological relief that ambien brings (along with the physical effects). I LOVED ambien. But then it stopped working (I was up to three a night and still sleepless), and I had to figure out how to deal with my insomnia, which I've had on and off since I was five.

Acupuncture helps, getting off caffeine helps, meditation cds that I listen to when I can't sleep help, but mostly it was learning to trust that I would do fine the next day without enough sleep. The panicky feeling is self-fulfilling, so if I can stop that, I am 80% there.

I really like not being dependent on sleep meds.

So it looks like from the other responses that sleep meds are fine to take, but just wanted to let you know, from one insomniac to another, that there is life after meds.
