finally moving into nighttime EC...

DD is 23 months, EC'd since two weeks, pretty much dry during the day since 12 months, and now taking the initiative pretty consistently during the day by telling me when she needs to pee. Definitely a daytime grad.

But I've never really tried to EC her at night, because, well, nighttime sleep has just always been so horrible. She had NEVER slept all night, by which I mean slept 5 hours straight, until maybe...the last few weeks? And she's only done it a few times. She has slept 4 hours straight a few times, but her usual pattern is to wake every three hours. Anyway, sleep has just been a way, way higher priority than EC at night. So we've just always used diapers (cloth fuzzi bunz or other pocket diapers) at night, and DD was fine with that.

But just in the last couple of weeks, she has started to REALLY hate wearing diapers at night. She never wears diapers or even trainers during the day anymore, so I think it just feels crazy to her. Trouble is, she still pees at night. Not *while* she's sleeping--but she wakes up so frequently that there are plenty of opportunities to pee. She usually doesn't pee in the middle of the night, but sometimes she does, and she almost always pees in her diaper at some point in the morning (say, between 5 am and 8 am) before she's willing to get up and go potty. I generally know when it happens, or about when it happens, but she insists she doesn't need to go and won't let me take her potty.

Oh, we bedshare, and while I have a good waterproof mattress pad, I *really* do not like being woken up by a flood of pee on my hip.

Tonight I persuaded her to sleep in a trainer (yay for EC store trainers!) by telling her it was "special underwear", and I've got a bath towel underneath her. I have a stack of towels beside the bed, so I figure I can just switch them out when/if she pees on them. But I don't know how much this is going to help with actual "potty learning" at night. She was already wearing cloth, so she was generally aware when she peed, and I was aware, too. It's definitely going to be more uncomfortable (for both of us!) now when she pees in bed, though.

Ah, well...at least it'll be a nice use for those lovely EC store trainers that I invested in and barely got to use...!

Anybody have better ideas for me?

Thanks!

Hi Lisa! Well, Hannah has been the queen of the night time refusers for over a year, and recently will actually pee in the potty if we both sit on the potty at the same time. (Each on our own potties, that is! ) I just take her and say "Mommy needs to pee" (which is true!) and while she does fuss, she will pee. It's such a relief, since it used to be that she'd wake up and I'd be dying to pee and would have to wait until she fell back asleep before I could get up and go, and then hope she wouldn't wake up. Are you asking her if she needs to pee? If I ask, I will definitely get a "no" so I just take her. I just explain that once we've woken up, we need to go pee. We even get a 3.5-hour stretch after the first wake up when she pees. Heavenly!! Can you relate it to the fact that she's wearing panties? Like, "Ok, we're awake, we need to go take off panties and go potty" or whatever. Usually Hannah is asking for nueys the whole time, but she does make it through and both of us are happy in the end! I don't take her at each wake up, but I do tend to take her two or three times a night. She's still in night night diapers, though. (She wanted to wear her panties the other night, so I let her, but she peed. But she won't pee in the diaper. Go figure!)
