What's in your diaper bag? - Page 2

Usually DH has the car at work, so when DD and I go out I usually wear her in a carrier and walk or take the bus. A diaper bag gets in the way too much when I'm already wearing the baby, so I've starting using one of those cheap cloth purse/backpacks that has two little straps that work as a drawstring for the top of the bag. I love it! It's lightweight and flexible, and doesn't get in the way of the carrier because I can just throw it on my back. If we go out, I'm usually also using this bag as a shopping bag/library book carrier, so I need to have lots of extra space in it. I don't tend to carry much for DD, poor kid! I used to carry a burp cloth, for example - now I just blot with a sleeve and hope for the best.

My stuff:
- wallet, cell phone, house key, bus pass. (I stopped trying to bring stuff along to keep myself presentable or clean a long time ago!)
- Not in the diaper bag, but... I'm also almost always carrying a travel mug with coffee. I'm working on breaking the habit, it's a PITA to carry it everywhere but I just struggle to go without my coffee for any length of time... !

DD's stuff:
- spare pacifier with a cover to keep it clean
- 1-2 pocket diapers (depending on length of outing)
- Ziplock baggie with a couple of cloth wipes
- 1 "emergency" 'sposie
- a plastic grocery bag to use as a wet bag
- spare socks and a sleeper for "emergency" clothes
- flannel receiving blanket to use as a changing pad

If we're going out to eat, I also bring:
- baby food jar full of Cheerios and/or bits of fruit or veggies
- a couple of small toys
- Tiny Diner portable placemat (I love this thing!)

I have this diaper bag:
http://www.lesportsac.com/store/7841_5205.html

I've got a couple diapers, liners, an extra cover and the wet bag.
A spare sleeper
Bum cream (A locally made beeswax based one)
7th generation disposable wipes (We use cloth in a warmer at home)
A ziplock bag (Never know when you'll need one)
A Handful of cotton balls
A washcloth
changing pad
a couple tubes of Cocintyx (sp?) for colic
Ovol drops
a receiving blanket
her weight/immunization record (lol as we don't vax)
and I throw the Maya wrap in if I'm going out for a long time

And in the mama-part
a pen
my wallet/chequebook
cell phone
keys
chapstick

I should note that I don;t bring the diaper bag if I'm going somewhere I'm unlikely to change her- if I'm going to the grocery store for example. Otherwise, I chuck a couple things in my purse or in the Maya wrap pocket

I have this bag...and I hate it. It is way too small for my packing style. Definitely on the look-out for something cute but BIGGER.

In the little zippered outside pocket (on flap) I keep coupons. Lift the flap and I keep my slimline wallet in one of the pockets, receipts in another and punch cards in another.

The bag has an outside pocket on each end, one pocket holds a few wash cloths for quick spit-up catches (my baby has reflux pretty badly) and the other pocket holds hand sanitizer and a pack of pacifier wipes.

On the back there is another long pocket that spans the length of the bag. In here I have all kinds of paper (like bills and parent-teacher conference notices) stuffed in and loose change scattered around.

INSIDE the bag I have a travel pack of Pampers Sensitive wipes (too lazy to deal with my flannel wipes outside the house) in one of the inside pockets. In another inside pocket I keep the stroller clips. The other inside pockets hold California Baby cream, some Band-Aids, a lip gloss, hair ties, a collapsible cup, Snappis, and Kashi bars. In the main inner compartment we have both a small (for baby clothes) and medium (for dirty dipes) Planet Wise Wet Bags. Three pre-stuffed NuBunz pocket diapers. The big fold-out changing pad that came with the bag which takes up too much room and has only ever been used once. A spare baby outfit, extra baby socks, and 3 or 4 now-too-small prefolds for more spit-up catches/clean-ups.

I use the mp3 player pocket on top of the bag to hold my beloved Burt's Bees Pomegranate lip balm that I do not want to imagine living without, a tweezers and my cell phone.

The red cell phone pocket on the front I keep a pack of gum in.

I learned the (very) hard way that I need to keep a baby carrier of some sort, at least my adjustable fleece pouch which rolls up nicely, with me at all times, and this stupidly small diaper bag doesn't allow room for anything other than the items listed. So I end up carrying the carrier in addition to the bag. So annoying.

I have one bag I carry and another bag I leave in the car. For short trips, I just upt her in Ergo and don't bring anything else. I also bring a lunch bag if we are eating out, though not always needed.

Carrying bag
:splurged on a large Juicy Couture shoulder bag 50% off at Nordstrom's half yearly sale- good deal!

(main comparment)
my big wallet
rolled up nursing cover
rolled up hotslings
home-made rolled up changing pad- with 2-3 disposable diapers
disposable wipes
yes these are all rolled up into batons and secured with hair tie
empty sippy cup- I can always buy water/soymilk/etc but not so easy to find a sippy on the road!
sippy cup strap
small container of cheerio/dried fruit mix
small pack of soymilk (DD is allergic to dairy)
digital camera- a lot of times I have this clipped on my waist

(side compartment)
board books- dr. suess, pat the bunny, etc.
few finger puppets
musical greeting card- smallest musical toy I can find
spare pair of socks
teething toy

(mini zip compartment)
couple bandaids
hand sanitizer
hair tie
pen
couple of boogie wipes

(pants pocket)
tiny wallet with atm card, grocery store card, library card
cell phone
few quarters for parking meters

Car Bag
:hand-me-down LL bean huge duffle-type diaper bag
I never take this out of the minivan so I stuff it to the max.

a whole sleeve of disposable diapers ~20? can never have too many
big disposable wipe pack
change of clothes for DD
receiving blanket
3-4 bottles of water
pack of soymilk
pack of juice
sippy cup
couple of small plush toys
changing pad- usually ready to go in back of van. DD HATES public bathrooms so I mosty change her in the van.

(Lunch cooler bag)

homemade high chair cover
homemade sleeved bib
disposable stick-on placemat
disposable bibs
sippy cup
sippy cup strap
2-3 rubber tipped spoons
one pack of emergency baby food (DD rarely eats these any more at 13mo, but still)
small container of cheerio/dry fruit mix
then throw in a couple of ziploc bags of half avocado or strawberries or whatnot, in case DD won't eat what I order. but she always wants to try what I'm having anyway. sometimes we have to bring more food if we are having sushi or something I don't want DD to have.

Dang, it is a lot of stuff, isn't it....I do usually drive and bring stroller, too. Load up all my bags onto the stroller and DD ends up on me in Ergo or sling.

So for fun, I decided to assemble all the stuff I listed in my post, and it actually looks like a lot! So much for minimalist living...

Comtessa's diaper bag (and coffee cup)

well...i just grab a stuffed BG OS pocket, a couple of wipes and toss them in my purse. when finished with the diaper, i just tuck the wipes inside, wrap it up and use the velcro to keep it closed.

i usually bring a waterbottle for the kids too.

I try to be minimalist when we're out. If we're only out for an hour or two, I usually just have my cellphone and wallet only. Occasionally I'll bring a toy or two as well.

If we're going longer, my diaper bag has:
2 cloth prefolds
1 extra bummis cover
ziplock of wet cloth wipes
change pad
receiving blanket (for mopping up spit up, drool, etc.)
a few toys
extra onesie
bib
hand sanitizer

Since DD started on solids and if we'll be out for a long time, then I'll bring an eating bib, a spoon, and some snacks (if I remember!)

We don't have a car, so everything has to be easy to carry.

This.

If we're going to be out for longer than two hours or so, I'll bring:

A change of clothes
Changing pad
Diapers and wipes (which go into zip bags attached to the changing pad)
Wet bag for dirty diapers or other trash
A receiving blanket that I use as any of the following: blanket, nursing cover, burp cloth
One or two toys
Bib (the drool faucet is on full strength right now)
Sling

My dd is 4 months old, so I don't really need snacks or many toys to keep her occupied.

I have this bag.

I carry a backpack. It has two big compartments and two smaller zipped pockets and one mesh pocket.

In the compartment closer to my back, I carry:

- waterproof envelope for dirty diapers
- wipes
- five prefolds
- 1-3 covers (depending on whether or not I expect my son to poo while we're out :P)

In the other large compartment I carry:

- a flannel blanket that doubles as a changing pad
- a backup outfit
- a toy
- an umbrella if it looks like rain

In the first of the two pockets I carry:

- another toy
- a book for myself

And in the final pocket, I carry miscellaneous things of my own:

- a little pocket change (two or three dollars, some quarters, etc)
- my ID and bus pass and stuff
- pens
- a canvas bag for shopping

In the mesh pocket, I carry:
- my cell phone
- a hat for the baby (sun hat if it's nice, knit hat otherwise)

We're usually out for 8-9 hours at a time, so if this sounds like a lot of stuff... it's because we need it. We don't generally use all the diapers (and rarely need the backup outfit) but I'd rather have them on hand then be caught without.
