OB not having me pee in a cup? - Page 2

I have always had to pee in a cup, every visit, for every child I have had.

If you don't pee in a cup, why go to the doctor so often anyways? I can monitor my b/p and weight at home, and that is the only other thing that is done every visit until they start listening to the h/b around 20 wks.

Same here. Not once with DS but everytime with DD.

My midwife has me do it at every visit. It doesn't bother me at all. I figure that it is a non-invasive way to get some additional information. Besides, I have to pee all the time anyway, so why not occasionally do it in a cup?

There have been threads before about how routine urinanalysis is probably not evidenced-based. The midwives at my local Planned Parenthood and university hospital no longer do them.

No need for routine glycosuria/proteinuria screen in pregnant women

My doula said doctors who do urine tests only test for glucose and protein, which aren't all that helpful anywasy. With her homebirth clients she tests for more than what ob/gyn's test for. Here is what she tests and her thoughts about each one.

Glucose: not much use because only does recent results
Protein: can be of no clinical value, if she finds protein she watches blood pressure and edema more carefully
Ketones: indicates you are burning fat reserves and need to increase calorie intake.
Specific Gravity: indicates if you are getting enough water or if you kidneys are working correctly.
Leukocytes: can be of no clinical value, if she finds leukocytes she sees if her patient has symptoms of a urine tract infection
Nitrates: usually indicate urine tract issue.

She said for me, Ketones would be a test that would have value, since I have a twin pregnancy, my calorie intake is important.

Interesting conversation over peeing in a cup.
