my kids are laughing at me bc yrs ago i got rid of all the plastic in my kitchen in favor of stainless steel and glass, and now that i've really gotten into home culturing i'm having to go out and buy plastic again!

i need to get plastic measuring cups and spoons as well as a plastic strainer. i get that i shouldn't use metal for my yogurt and kefir, but i guess i dont know why. can anyone explain that?

FWIW, i just poked around and it seems that Dom says SS is fine. I'd still like to hear what others think.

I've always used stainless steel for my cultures (measuring spoons and cups, and a metal strainer) and I have NEVER had a problem.

I know a bunch of sources out there say never to use metal, but I often wonder how much of that is just one of those "one person said it and now everyone takes it as gospel" kind of things. I understand not using iron or aluminum, but stainless steel is pretty non-reactive.

I really like my bamboo strainer that I bought from Frontier. Dodged the metal/plastic problem completely, lol.

Is there a reason you aren't using glass?

*shrugs* I use metal for everything. I can't exactly afford new spoons and bowls and strainers and stuff for culturing, so I use what I have and it works fine.
