Anyone used IRS form W-7a for temp SSN?

This is for taxes only and is written for people who are pending adoption but able to claim kids without a SSN. But my lawyer just told me that we can use it post-adoption (final on 10/22 and STILL don't have amended birth cert so we can't apply for SSN ).

Has anyone done this? All the required docs look pre-adoptive. I'm wondering if I can use my copy of the adoption decree (I don't have a raised seal copy yet--do I need that?) and apply for the temp # so I can file my taxes...? It does appear to say that I shouldn't use it post-adoption but my lawyer claims that people have done it. Looking for people who actually HAVE done it. Wondering if maybe they submitted all the pre-adoptive paperwork as if it wasn't finalized.

Did she have a SSN when she was still in foster care?

Nevermind... lawyer just e-mailed back that he JUST got it. I have to believe him because the cert is dated 1/20/2010.

But... if anyone has this info, it might be useful to people going forward!!!

Polliwog... she did. As I understand it, if you use that post-adoption you're locked into it forever. I don't remember the details of that, though. If I put her in as if she was still a foster child, I also can't claim the tax credit.

Crud, I hope not. I used Chris's old number last year since I didn't have his BC yet. And I thought that I was told I could change it. Won't really matter since I didn't earn enough this year to use it and Polliwog's will kick in next year. Since I'm since, there's no way I would be able to fully use both.

I'm glad you got Lala's BC.

I doubt that using a SS# for taxes locks you in. I competely botched our taxes two years ago due to a mistake on dd's records I copied. The government was very forgiving

Polliwog--I got that info from the other fp board that we're on so I don't remember the details. I just remembered the important part at the time.
