moldy ginger root

I want to make ginger tea, but the ginger root had a couple spots of mold. Is it still safe to peel & boil?

I'm guessing yes because the inside still smells good (reallllly good, actually, yum) but I'm wondering if anyone else has done the same and lived to tell about it
