DD not reusing words

Let me just say, I'm not really worried about this too much but I figured I'd ask just to be on the safe side.

DD's been "speaking" for about 6 months now. However, she'll only say words a handful of times and then not use them again. She can definitely understand them and will respond through gestures/signing, etc. but she rarely if ever uses actually language to communicate. For instance, when sitting on the potty she's said "done" a couple of times and then never said it again. We've counted and she's said (within the past 6 months) 27 words and knows 2 letters but we can go days without her using any of them or at most she'll say "hi", "mamamama", and occasionally "that". She's just started saying "yeah" regularly but not always in context, more when she's excited about something.

I know some of our other friends who have kids have said that they've seen the same thing but that was normally when their kids just started talking... not necessarily after months of it so I wanted to check if this is normal? I remember reading once that it could be a sign of autism if a kid speaks and then stops speaking but I didn't know if there was any problems when a kid says words but then doesn't say them again (but later on says new words).

I hope it's not a problem Lina does that too.

Now, she will revisit words after awhile. Like she first said "mommy" about 2 months ago and now uses it a few times a week.

I think it also depends on how much the word matters to the LO, and that's not always logical. For instance, "kitty" has been a consistent word from day one of talking at all, but the nursing sign took forever to start and a few months to get used regularly

Cain did the exact same thing. He STILL does it with new words. We cannot get the child to say "milk" for anything. In the past two months he's really starting to reuse words and incorporate them into "conversation" or at least tell us what he wants.

With other words...he'll say them once VERY CLEARLY then refuse to say them again. Last night he said "juice!" very clear, loud, precise. When we got excited and tried to prompt him to say it again, he just looked at us like we were nuts.

Wow, the memory goes fast with a LO, I was looking through my baby journal for Lina and yeah, when she first started talking, she'd use a word once and then we wouldn't hear it for months. That started changing around 14 months, but there are some new words from even last month that I haven't heard again yet.

Thanks everyone, I feel a lot better! It's good to hear that this is quite common.

My kids have done this with several new skills, not just speaking/words. It's like they master something then shelve it for a while and then eventually go back to using it again
