Placenta near to a fibroid UPDATE post 5

Hi - I am 6 weeks pregnant and had an ultrasound today. Baby appears fine, good heartbeat, but I have a 3cm fibroid that is near, but not on, the placenta.

Dr. didn't really explain much other than telling me to go back next week for another ultrasound. He wants to keep an eye on things. He also told me - and this has upset me no end - that I should not lift up and carry my toddler, who is almost two. He doesn't even want me to have her sitting on my lap (honestly, I thought that bit was ridiculous.) He made a comment about wishing he could wrap me in cotton wool, sit me in sunlight and feed me fertiliser - which makes me think he has a very conservative approach.

I feel sick. After 2 miscarriages in the past 9 months this was supposed to be a time of joy. Now I feel worse than ever.

Does anyone have any experience of this? How did your pregnancies go - was the baby OK? And were you given any physical restrictions to follow? I am out of my mind but cannot see him again until next week.

I don't have any answers but wanted to bump this

I have done some reading on this, and it can tend to lead to miscarriages at a higher rate.

I am totally different than you, and wont have any answers for another 2-3 weeks. They found on with my 23 week US. No one told me where it was located at relevant to my placenta. All I know is it is going towards my right ovary.

I found this.

Honestly, I had a fibroid that they found at my 18 weeks scan. Unless the embryo implants on a fibroid, it's fine. And if it did, it would be an early miscarriage (aka, it would have already happened). Unless the fibroid is HUGE, and 3 cm is considered small, there's little/no risk. With a huge fibroid, there is the risk that it causes pre-term labor, since your uterus may be stretched to maximum capacity with baby + fibroid.

Honestly, your OB sounds a bit scary to me. Feed you fertilizer? You are not going to shatter.

You will be fine, your baby will be fine. He's causing you to freak out unnecessarily. 3cm is really small. And the placenta is not on it. Also, the small size of it makes it unlikely it will grow during pregnancy. 3cm is a really small area of a fully stretched uterus with a full term baby in it.

I learned at 6 weeks that I have a 3cm calcified fibroid. Between a midwife, a ob, and a perinatologist no one is worried about it. If it was going to be a problem it would have presented one by now. The two issues I've read are with huge fibroids causing ptl...after viability though, and if they are lower than the baby it can block the cervix, totally fixable with a csection.

I'm surprised your doc is being so concerned. Seems like he isn't thinking about how much stress he's causing.

I have just spoken with the doctor. Apparently the placenta is not on/near the fibroid - he is simply concerned that I have a 3cm fibroid. (How I came away thinking that I did, I do not know. I know he talked about placenta and blood supply at some point.) From my research, that poses very little risk, so I am feeling much better about things than I was before. Thanks for the good wishes!
