OH NO ! 21 month son with UTI? UPDaTE

I'm pretty sure my DS has a UTI

He woke up this morning and was upset when he was peeing on the potty. His urine was cloudy and foul smelling. He's never had this before. He is uncircumsized.
He does not have a fever, and is otherwise fine.

Obviously I want to avoid abx (he already has food intolerances that we've taken over a year to try to heal)

What can I do to help him????

I'm going to get some cranberry juice, but to be honest I doubt he'll drink it (doesn't like anything but water and BM)

He's in a dry diaper for long periods since we've been potty learning for a while, but I'll leave him nakey today. I'll let him sit in the bath a few times today too.

I'm going to call the dr to go in to get a culture to be sure (I know about the collecting issues) Collecting shouldn't be an issue since he likes to pee standing up, hopefully I can just get him to pee in a cup.

Please help!! Thank you

Subsequent pees this morning aren't cloudy and foul smelling and he's not complaining.......what does that mean??

Ugh...should I go to the Ped today or wait.....I hate to go if I don't have to....

If you want to know for sure, just go and have a culture done...no biggie since you know to bag him only!

Although it sounds like whatever is going on may not be a UTI. They are usually painful and often kids will have a fever (but not always). If he does have a UTI there are natural alternatives to ABX.

I wold def give him the cranberry juice...hopefully you can convince him to drink it!

Yes, I'm taking him to the Ped tomorrow (that's when they can get us in). I've got a urine sample cup, they said I could bring in a sample and they'll test it right there.

Going to see my ND this afternoon. Hopefully we kick it before the Ped, so the test shows up negative.

He's not liking the juice unless I add so much water that he would have to drink 3 gallons for it to be effective. Trying to homemade blueberry juice with vit c added too. I'm also reminding him to drink more water too (& nursing of course) Gave him more probiotics. We do a whole foods diet already.

Still no fever or funky smell throughout the rest of the day....crossing my fingers that we can kick this without abx

I think I'm just feeling a little overwhelmed as I had to drive for 3 hours to a funeral, then 3 hours home yesterday with the just me & him. The car ride was awful and I'm sure his lack of eating & drinking normally played a part in this - my poor little guy

Thanks Pat - I didn't know to look for a specific strain.

The ND tested his urine and his proteins were high, but no white blood cells or blood which is great, but definitely has a little infection. Still no fever, and he's still happy.
She gave us the D. Mannose... which I read about, so was happy with.

He's had a couple of 1/4 tsp doses already. I think I'll keep the Ped appt tomorrow just b/c I know she'll test his urine too and I can see if there is improvement or not.

Can I just say how thankful I am that we began "potty learning" at 1 year old. He thought his was hilarious peeing into the sterile urine sample cup! Our ND was so happy that we brought in that sample, she was a little worried about how to collect it I'm happy not to have to worry about retraction at the Ped's too.

Just got back from the Ped. He now has blood, white blood cells, ketones in his urine. Still no fever.

I'm still giving the d. mannose, probiotics & lot's of water. He refuses any juice & vit c - he can taste the slightest amount.....

I'm so upset about this....of course the Ped didn't help "it's so unusual in boys". He's ben potty learning and loves to pull, yank & stick his fingers everywhere down there, I don't let him walk around covered in poop

I have a script for abx. She and I agreed not to fill until the culture results are back on Fri, unless of course he gets worse before then
I've been crying about this all morning, I can't undo the 1.5 years of gut healing from the previous damage done by abx......ugh

I'm trying to stay positive and hop the mannose works.
I could use some positive stories of healing uti's without abx in toddlers if anyone has them ?

Don't despair...UTI do not nec needs abx...my ND feels that abx are not necessary for UTI's unless the infection is in the kidneys as well. read this http://www.herbs2000.com/disorders/urinary_inf.htm it has lots of ideas and a guide for dosing kids. Homeopathy is safe in kids of all ages as well

try to get that cranberry juice in him anyway you can!
