It's taken me a while to get here to announce, but our baby boy is here! Logan Grey was born at home in the water on January 17th, weighing 9 lbs 2 oz and measuring 22" long.
It was sooooo different from my daughter's hospital birth - pretty much in every way possible. I started to think that my contractions were more than BH at about 9:00 Saturday night. They were about four minutes apart, but didn't last more than 15 seconds or so each. In the midnight hour (when we went to bed) I was pretty sure they were something because I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep through the pain. My husband asked if I wanted to try a bath to see if that calmed anything down. When I tried to get up to head to the bathroom, my water broke. So, my husband called our midwife and I called my sister. I sat in the bath and played games on my iphone while my husband took care of all the prep work in our bedroom. He was amazing. After a while I just didn't want to be in the water anymore so I headed back to our bedroom and hung out on the bed to weather the contractions. I was amazed at how relaxed I was. When the contractions got stronger I moved to the birthing pool. This was probably around 3:00 a.m. Only the last hour was really challenging, and I pushed for maybe 20 minutes. And then there was Logan! He was born at 5:05 a.m. And I needed only one stitch. Yay! He nursed very soon after birth, and so well! The nifty thing was that our daughter slept through it all, until the moment the head was crowning! We heard this little "Mama, can you please come?" on the monitor next to the birthing pool. She only had to wait a three minutes or so before my husband could go in and get her. She was a little surprised by the activity going on in our bedroom.
Timing couldn't have been better, as I was a little more "vocal" than I had hoped or anticipated. But, that's what woke her up!
What was really fantastic was finding ourselves alone within three hours! No nurses, doctors, blood pressure cuffs, threats of glucose water, nothing. I am so grateful that we changed our plans midway through the pregnancy and went with a homebirth. So very grateful. Our midwife and her assistant were wonderful.
So, we've been enjoying he last nine days and have been amazed at the difference between our last babymoon and this one. Like night and day. I'm certain the homebirth has almost everything to do with it. What a great start to his new life. And we are SO in love with this sweet baby.
All the best to those of you still awaiting your little one's arrival!
