BPA free dish sets/kids

Thread Starter
Hi everyone... just wondering what everyone uses for dishes/cups for their kids, I'm looking at the Ikea Kalas set... I've heard they're BPA free, but it doesn't say so on the website, just says it's polypropylene. Any thoughts? I really would like products that are free of BPA, phthalates, lead, pvc, and Melamine. I really would like to keep cost down if possible, looking to get a larger set as I have 3 kids that will be using it.

thanks!

I just started looking into plastics after becoming interested in bento lunches. If you do a search it will turn up pages listing safe products. Some companies(like rubbermaid) list which of their products are BPA free.

Page I saved:

I just use correlle. It's tempered glass. It CAN break but you really have to throw it hard, not just drop it (We don't have tile floors, tho. Maybe they'd break if dropped on tile). Ds was never one to throw things that he knew could break, even when he was at that toddler throwing stage, so it was actually good for him to use fragile dishes. He'd break one and then be careful after that. But kids are very different, lol. My nephew was a thrower and seemed to like the spectacular effect of things shattering.

We also use corelle (the plain white) and small glasses, too, but my kids have never been throwers.

Sorry, probably not much help.

eta- just wanted to say that corelle does make a divided plate in two sizes, dinner and luncheon. It's got 3 sections - two small and one large... some dc do better w/this.

We use stainless steel dishes and cups for that purpose.

I'm trying to avoid plastics of any sort as much as possible, including silicone and melamine. They used to think plastics were safe. Now we know of concerns from phthalates and BPA. What will be next? I find it likely that they will find more compounds in man-made polymers that are not good for our health. So I'd rather avoid plastics entirely.

I have corelle ware, which is break-resistant, and I've been looking at enamelware, which is unbreakable but can chip. Stainless steel is unbreakable as well.

I've not been able to find non-plastic sippy cups. I'm thinking of just going from bottle to handled cup like they used to. We'll see!

We use a set of old wood salad bowls that were my grandmother's. For dinner, he uses the salad plate from our ceramic set.

I'm in this same predicament too. I just found some really cute little bamboo plates though that I'm going to give a try.

PP - I made my own sippy cups with old jelly and olive jars. I drilled a hole in the top and inserted a stainless steel straw. It's not totally spill-proof (if it's tipped over, liquid can leak around the straw), but it's a lot easier to wipe up a little puddle than a whole glass full of water!

Another suggestion, maybe, is to have your child drink from a glass drink bottle. DS drinks Perrier from a small, single-serving glass bottle. So, you could use a small bottle like that. It would still pose a spill risk, and a dumping risk, but perhaps not as great as an open cup.

Hi, girlygirls3. My kids are the same ages as yours. I recently replaced our melamine plates and bowls with glass Kidishes. I feel much better about them eating off of glass. They're supposed to be relatively unbreakable, but my dd did drop one into the sink and it broke. The sink is very hard, though.

I don't trust plastic because I'm wary of what bad thing will be discovered next about the plastic we think is safe.

Here's a link to Kidishes. You can watch the video of the girl dropping them on the floor.
