Never feel the letdown

Thread Starter
I exclusively breast feed my 7 week old daughter, she is my first child. We have had a slightly bumpy road, but seems like we're on a good path now. My question is about the letdown sensation, which I never feel. Does this indicate anything? Is there anything I can or should be doing differently? I can tell when it happens because she gulps more and her eyes open wider, but I don't feel any sensation.

Thanks in advance!

Don't worry - some mothers don't feel a let down ever, and some feel it so bad they get sick, as long as your baby is gaining weight with regular wet and dirty nappies then all should be well. Keep up the nursing you're doing a great job!

about gaining and wet/dirty dipes.
I remember feeling a letdown sensation a few times early on (hard to describe, but felt like a tingle coming from high up in the breast)
but I haven't felt that in months and months.

I've been nursing for nearly 3 yrs straight and have never felt my letdown. I wouldn't worry in the least

Me neither. Breastfed for 2.75 years with one and 8 months with another so far, never felt this thing they describe.

I felt the letdown only once or twice. Still nursing a 16 month old.

Count yourselves lucky!

Mine is so forcefull, that it is shocking everytime, and sometimes painfull. It feels like my breasts are being electrocuted or something. Thankfully the sensation goes away after a few seconds, but its wierd!

I breastfed for a total of 7 years and I NEVER felt letdown...never. I had a AWESOME supply....could get 10 oz of milk in 10 minutes of pumping and NEVER felt "full" either. I never sprayed, or leaked....ever. And babes were big at birth- 10 pounds and 9.4 pounds and never supplemented an ounce.

So....letdown, leaking, fullness, spraying...none of it is an indication of your true milk supply. Look at your baby, how much they are growing, and wet diapers for a better indictation of where your supply is really at.

Good luck!

I didn't feel the letdown until 18 months into nursing my second child (and I'd nursed #1 for 2.5 years.)

When it happened, it was unmistakably that pins and needles feeling you read about. I'm glad I finally got to experience it, if only to know what everyone was talking about. But really, it had nothing to do with milk supply.

Never felt it with DD1, feel it regularly now with DD2.

Hey there! You sound just like me! I still haven't felt a "let down" of milk during nursing (LO is 7 weeks tomorrow)-- but I have plenty of "electric" sensations between nursing. (go figure!)

Me, too. And if 16 months of pumping for DD is any indication, I will always feel it with DS. I think it has its advantages, though. DS can get a little lazy sometimes, so if I feel it, I know when to stimulate him to get to work!

No letdown sensation here either...and no leaking, spraying or full feeling (except once, when he slept his first 6 hour stretch as an 8 week old).

I've never leaked, either.
