Piano Lesson Costs

Hi! I don't post on this board much, but I often lurk.

I am searching for a piano teacher to give lessons to 2 of my children. I have found lessons for $250/month, 1 30 minute lesson a week, and they will come to my home. I have also found a local lady who gives lessons at a church, and the cost is $92/month, also 1 30 minute lesson once a week. Obviously I wish to keep costs low, and I really hit it off w/the 2nd lady.

If your children are taking piano lessons, what do you pay? I'm just curious what the norm is... TIA!

60/month for each child

My oldest has a 30 min private lesson 1x week
My younger has a 60 min small group 1x week

But, she has left me with the same rate for 4 years now. I know that for new families, her price is a bit higher (I think 70). When I called around (four years ago) the range in our town was 40-75/month for a once a week lesson. Lessons are standard at 30 min. for private and 60 min for small group. In our small groups, each child is at their own piano, but the group works together with games for note reading, etc.

my fiance teaches private lessons to students in the Chicago area (piano/guitar) and he charges about 60$ in the prime hours (after school slots), and about $50 for more inconvenient time slots (late evenings/after 7ish)

He drives to the students and will charge a bit more if it is a long way to drive.

Thanks for the replies! Sounds like I've found a pretty good deal, then. This woman is super nice, teaches many hs children, and has experience working with special needs children (we suspect my ds is on the spectrum somewhere like his big sister and his father), and she also teaches the blind to play.

We have a really great homeschooling piano teacher. My daughter takes lessons once a week for $12 a lesson.

The prices on here are really high! They are here in town, too. At dh's old job, we got them free. Now they are $20/30 minutes/per child. Crazy when you have 3 kids who want lessons and you want them, too!

Violin is only $10/30 minutes/per kid/per week here.

We pay $40 for 4 30-45 min lessons a month. I would never pay $250 a month that is crazy.

Hi,

I'm in Colorado ... we pay $90/month for a 30-minute lesson per week. After three family members, all subsequent family members are free. So, we pay $270/month for 4 of us to take a weekly lesson.

peace,

I have a 9.5 year old boy who has been taking piano lessons for almost 4.5 years. We pay $12.50/lesson for him.

My 6.5 year old boy just started taking lessons in September. We pay
$11.25/lesson for him.

Their piano teacher has a degree in music and is the pianist at a huge local church.

One way to get the price of piano lessons down is to look out for teachers who give group lessons. Some of the music schools in your area may have them. Also, Music for Young Children (www.myc.com), Musikgarten (www.musikgarten.com), Harmony Road (www.harmonyroadmusic.com)
and Yamaha Music Schools (http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/...ml?CTID=218800) all offer group piano/keyboard lessons and may be available in your area.

Our teacher does 10 week sessions. It's $405 for a 45 minute lesson once a week, $300 for a 30 minute lesson. We travel to her house.

Our lessons are...

...$13/week for 1/2 hour lesson for my almost 7 year old - her house. Though I believe that is her regular rate for everyone. We love her! She says she charges less because she only teaches to grade 4 conservatory, I think, and doesn't do recitals or competitions, which was fine with us. I just wanted the kids to learn for the skill and personal enjoyment. If they want more from piano later, we will readdress it in the future but I can't see it happening.

Thanks so much for all the replies. I just got the more reasonable teacher's policy mailer yesterday. She offers 3 lessons a month for $36, which is what I believe we'll do. She is the pianist for a local church, and has a degree in music and music theory, and she does so many different styles of music. We are looking for secular teachings, and she will accomodate (good grief, I can't spell that word, lol) that. My son, in particular wants to learn to play "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance.

Oh, and there are 2 recitals a year, but they are not required, so I'll leave that up to my kiddos.
