I'm doing research on carpet and end up with more questions than answers.

We have a carpeted stairway and upstairs hall. There is wood underneath, but it was not refinished when the floors were - I peeked. We need to remove the carpet and probably would like to replace it - the stairs are fairly steep, with winders. I've tripped on them once, myself....I think we need carpet there for safety.

Sooooo, wool carpet is better than synthetic, supposedly, but many wool carpets are treated with Permethrin. Wikipedia doesn't have nice things to say about even the small amount of pesticide used on wool carpet (I guess there are links between even small doses of Permethrin and Parkinsons?!?!)- and my 3 year still creeps up the stairs, like any kid - ugh, the hands she eats with....

You can get untreated wool carpets, but they are twice the price of already expensive wool, and I'd hate to end up with permanent wool buggies eating our sweaters and carpet.

Help me out here mamas, am I being unreasonably fearful, what is a reasonable compromise? Is there another solution that keeps the stairway cushioned that I'm missing? I don't think cork would work...
