I was making some applesauce the other day, and its totally not working out i put the whole apples in there(quartered), because I figured I could just strain the skins and seeds out. well, that's not working!!!! only a tiny tiny bit filters through ahhh! all those apples to waste?

Any tips on how to fix this? or maybe something else I can make from this? can I make apple cider from this? i've never made apple cider before.....

What are you using to strain it and are your apples cooked really really soft?

I use a chinois or the strainer attachment on my Kitchenaid mixer. With the chinois I have to periodically clear out the skins or there are so many they block the sauce from coming through. I never peel and rarely core my apples for sauce.

You need to cook the apples till they're falling apart so they go through whatever you're using to strain.

Good luck.

If you cored the apples before you put them in to cook, you should be able to blitz it with a small hand blender if you have one. Worst comes to worst, a blender could probably do the trick too but you'd have to make it a bit soupier to blend well.

i didnt peel or core them. i'll try cooking them longer. i allready usedthe hand blender on them, i suppose they're not soft enough

I made a ton of apple sauce last fall and the trick IMO is to cook them till they are like applesauce in the pot, then you can run them through a foodmill or a strainer super easy. Good luck!

a tip for next time, I peel & core mine, then throw the bigger chunks of the peel in while cooking, then fish them out before processing. not quite as healthy but I have the worst food processor ever and it won't handle the peel well enough.

Not that it helps you right now, but I always peel and core my apples for this reason. A long time ago I made a batch of applesauce with whole apples and then had a heck of a time straining it.

I can usually take the peel off in one long string, and like the pp, I just toss a couple in while cooking. The kids have actually told me that this is one of the things that they will remember about their mom - she could peel an apple without breaking the peel, lol!
