Looking for a sling/carrier/anything!

I'm wanting suggestions on what type of sling/carrier, etc. would be best for a newborn. I'm hoping to be able to nurse while he's in the carrier, and it would be a bonus if I could also continue to carry him in it once he's a little older, but definitely not a must. Any recommendations???

A ring sling is probably the best/easiest way to nurse a newborn.

I never got the hang of nursing in any kind of sling. But I loved the Moby when DD was tiny... definitely the easiest to use for any length of time, and she was really cozy in there.

I absolutely love a mei tai for a newborn -- I think it's easier than a ring sling and less cumbersome than a stretchy wrap, also more supportive for bigger baby carries as baby grows. You can nurse on either side with baby in an upright position.

Although it's most important to get the breastfeeding part down first, learn how to carry your baby, then put the two together! Newborns are so little and floppy sometimes that it can be hard to nurse in a carrier until baby's a bit bigger and you both know what you're doing. Just keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it!

I got a 5.5 yrd length of tshirt like fabric, cut it in half long ways, so I had two long 5.5 yrd length strands and had two wraps. Total, I spent $20 and had two wraps.

You can use them almost any way, on hip, sling like, front carry, back carry, and all different ages too.

this is a non expensive way to figure out which position your baby likes, and if you want to buy a carrier that holds the same way, and is "name brand" go for it. It's also VERY adjustable, so if you need a little more slack to BF, you can adjust it easily. I never bought another one, because I loved my wrap too much. I used it from birth to present (18 mo) and plan to use it still, and I may get another one for our next baby, just to get a different color.

All my girlfriends have one now, and love theirs and so do their babies! I don't have to hold his head when I carry him, and I never did, like what you are talking about with the sling. I always wondered about parents having to hold their newborns heads in the baby bjorn ones and such. I never did!

Some babies (like mine) HATE being carried on their back, so a sling was out of the question. Also, just scoot the baby over a little bit to one side and they are right in front of the boob to nurse.

For the first 6 months, you can't beat a Moby Wrap. so comfy, so many position possibilities, good to nurse in, good for easy in and out. But it won't last you for the long haul, if that was more important than the nursing than I'd say to look at a Beco, Ergo, or a mei tai, since you get so much more milage out of those types of carriers. the Moby is fabulous and stretchy but when your baby gets really big and heavy, that becomes a drawback and you'll need something more supportive.
