Vitamin C?

I've read that taking Vit. C during pregnancy can help to keep the bag of waters intact as long as possible. Since I had PROM last time I'd really like to do anything I could to avoid it this time. But how much do I take?

To bowel tolerance, as I would for a cold or infection? If so, do I do that everyday? If not, how much is a good idea? Any ideas or links? TIA

I would think take as much as you want and can afford. It's water soluable and what your body does not absorb it will just pee out. I might eat a lot of clementines/oranges too bc I think your body absorbs it better from food.

Well, first and foremost I would strongly suggest that you take the sodium ascorbate form of vitamin C if you're going to be taking it in large doses or for a prolonged period of time. There are some great threads in the health & healing forum about SA and why it's the form of C that you should take any time you supplement C. Here's a great thread for starters.

I was also reading this yesterday about the importance of supplementing vit C during pregnancy for many important reasons, not the least of which being prevention of SIDS.

That aside, I too have investigated the use of vit C to strengthen the amniotic sac because my SCHs put me at risk for PROM. From what I found, 1000mg/day was the general recommendation. I personally take more right now (closer to 2500mg/day) because my kids are both sick and I'm trying to minimize the impact of whatever I may catch, but I find that if I go much beyond that I'm at bowel tolerance (which seems really low to me for bowel tolerance, but that's what I've noticed).

Late in pregnancy, taking a lot should be OK. However, in very early pregnancy (like around the time you'd be finding out you were pregnant) taking too much vitamin C can increase your chances of miscarriage by making the environment in the womb too acidic for the embryo to stick (or something like that).

my midwife has me taking 1000mg/day total (my prenatal has 250, so I have to take an extra 750)
