Did you/will you have a ~20 week u/s? - Page 2

I will be skipping the 20 week ultrasound, for the 36 week.

Due to my recent diagnoses of lyme, my midwife wants to be assured there are no concerns for the baby that would require more care than the birth center could provide...

let me just put it out there, I HATE TICKS!!!

I had it with #1-#3. With #3 we also had a nuchal scan. With #4, we're without insurance up until May... but will be having level 2s throughout the last trimester due to my diabetes. We'll also have a fetal echo, as the little one is at increased risk for heart issues. Basically, it's to help me decide where to give birth. The University hospital in town is a Level III NICU--so if needed, we'd deliver there. The other two hospitals that we'd consider are Level II.

I had a early u/s for dates (and I was having spotting) as this pregnancy is immeidately following a m/c.
I will also have the 20 wk u/s to ensure all is well for our homebirth (from what they can see). We've declined all other diagnotic tests.

I keep going back and forth! I cannot decide, but at least have some time.

I will probably end up doing an US in the 20-30wk period for peace of mind for an UC.

I haven't seen enough research to feel that the risks of an US are more than the risks of being unprepared for detectable complications such as previa or severe defects.

I won't. No study has ever shown that there is an increase in good birth outcomes after a 20w ultrasound, regardless of birth location.

I'll get an ultrasound if there's an indication. I don't feel like I need one to justify birthing at home. I retain safety concerns about the level of exposure in routine ultrasounds for healthy pregnant women/babies. And I've all too often seen minor/incidental findings on ultrasound become HUGE issues in pregnancies when they really don't need to be.

I used U/S for all my pregnancies. This current pregnancy we did one at 9 weeks to confirm & one at 27 weeks to check for anomolies. We cleared both each time. We homebirth with a cpm, so if there was a chance of organ abnormalities, we would have needed to change plans & birth at the hospital.

I am awfully glad we chose to get an ultrasound. The birth center birth we were planning could have been absolutely disastrous. Now, we have time to prepare, both logistically and emotionally, and have all the proper care ready and waiting. Any speculated-upon dangers of ultrasound are absolutely worth knowledge and preparation, or more likely, peace of mind.

I did the 20 week scan, only one I'll do.
