16 weeks old-- waking up and staying awake, please help!

My daughter who is 16 weeks has always woken to nurse during the night, and we've had issues with "severe squirming" in her sleep that keeps me awake, but in general she was a good nighttime baby because she would always just nurse back to sleep, no crying etc (right from day 1). But lately we have had several nights where she wakes up and then stays awake for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. It is KILLING us. It seems to be worse when she goes to sleep early in the evening (like 7 pm)...and least likely to happen when she goes to bed late (like 9 or 9:30 pm)...but I thought early bedtimes were supposed to be a good thing!!??
I have no problem waking up constantly to nurse her (we cosleep)...I did that with my son for over 2 years and even though it was sometimes hard, it is so much better than one of us having to actually get out of bed. If we weren't also co sleeping with my 3 year old, I would probably just keep her in bed even if she cried- (sort of "in arms CIO" I guess- just to see if maybe she cried for just a couple minutes she would go back to sleep), but I don't want to wake up my son. So either me or my husband gets up with her and then she is all smiles and thinks it is party time!
Could this be the 4 month sleep regression? I remember at this age my son went from long streches of sleep to very frequent wakings, but still, I could aways nurse him back to sleep.
Anyone go through this at this age and then have it get better? Should I try to get her on the later bedtime consistently?
She is a catnapper during the day. Avg nap length is 45 mins.
Thank you for any advice!! We always said my son was a terrible sleeper because he has a hard time falling asleep and woke frequently throughout the night, now I realize it is all relative!!

We're in the same boat- I feel your pain! It's one thing to be woken up frequently, nurse, then go right back to sleep again, but having to stay up a couple of hours in the middle of the night is another...

Is there such a thing as a 4 month regression? I can't remember, since my older DS is 6 yrs I feel like I've forgotten what it's like My 4 mo. old has been doing the exact same thing for the past few nights. I thought the earlier bedtime - 9pm instead of 11pm like it's been - would help but now she's up at 4:30am like clockwork and won't go back to sleep until 6. She still sleeps a 7-8 hr stretch most nights, so I should consider myself lucky, but since I just can't myself to go to sleep as early as she does, I only get about 5hrs of sleep.

I was wondering if we're better off trying to get her back on her late night schedule...problem was that from about 9pm- 11 or midnight she would be very fussy. She only cat naps during the day - just like your little one- maybe that affects their sleep at night? I just can't get her to nap more than 20 min at a time unless we're driving and out and about. Her last evening nap is usually around 6:30-7pm...how about your little girl? Sometimes I wonder if it's best to keep her up (which isn't always easy to do) and then aim for an earlier bedtime.

Sorry I can't help...just wanted to commiserate. Hopefully others will give us some suggestions or just reasurrance that this stage will pass!
