baby hat question

Thread Starter
I'm currently knitting a newborn sized hat as a gift for my friend who is due with her first in a couple of weeks. The pattern has a chin strap that buttons at one side, but I was thinking it might be better to make two ties that tie under the chin. I am all about keeping things as easy as possible during life with a newborn, so what do you think is more practical/less fiddly - button at the side or tie under the chin?

For a newborn, I would honestly not bother with any straps! lol They tend to stay on with newborn - they arn't doing much and can't yet protest and fling them off! hehe

I also say no straps; my LO is nearly 10 weeks and still really doesn't have a chin to speak of, so I don't think it would help it stay on, usually for that age, so long as it is snug enough, no straps are needed.

if you are decided on straps, I would do the button thing if a boy, and two if it were a girl; since I'm assuming it would be tied in a bow, that might be odd on a boy baby.

HTH!

I don't like to tie things under my dd's chin. I'd do no straps or velcro. I think velcro is supposed to be the safest and easier than trying to button a hat on a wiggly baby. I think there are safety issues with the hats that tie.

is it a pilot cap? if it is then I would do ties. We love the hanna anderson pilot caps

my babe just grew out of my fav fav fav hat. it had a strap that velcroed on one side. it's the on;y one that would reliably stay put and was so easy do operate.

I'm voting against tie under chin. Babies can't life head up, so their chin usually rests on the chest, and then the bulk of the bow tie will get in the way of the chin.

I loved the hat ds had that buttoned to the side. He wasn't teeny when it fit him- he was a couple mos old. He could turn his head to the side, and it stayed in place, unlike other hats.
I found the button much easier than ties. I could do the button with one hand if I had to.
