swaddle question

DS loves to be swaddled. The minute he is swaddled, you can see a wave of calm wash over him. Here's the problem, he has started busting out of his swaddle while he is still asleep. His little arms start batting at his eyes, he tries shoving his hands in his mouth (but can't keep them there) and then he wakes up. He busts out of both the kiddopotomus swaddle and the miracle blanket. Here's the question? What do we do next? Thanks for any suggestions.

The Happiest Baby on the Block suggests that you secure the swaddle with a tie of some sort. With ds we used to swaddle him with a standard recieving blanket then tie a wide scarf around the blanket from his shoulders to his hips, this kept the swaddle in place overnight...he LOVED it! Slept like an angel. And with white noise and a pacifier, was sleeping through the night (like 10-12 hours) at 3 months.

Swaddled dd1 for quite a while
Something lie this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOnsKlluHIg
We used a stetchy piece of cloth for the first layer and then a thin non stetchy cotton on top.

Wow. Thank you for that link. I watched that and the related videos, and had never seen such a thing before. Amazing. Thanks!

Heh, that video is by someone from a local new moms' group here. Cool to see it getting around on the internet.

We use this one and I *love* it because her legs are free so I can pop her in the wrap or another carrier while she's still swaddled.

I am DEFINITELY trying that!! I never thought of putting a sleep sack over a swaddle.

LOVE it!
mine has been busting out for a while but i've had better luck leaving one arm out as the beginning of weaning her from it. at least this way the swaddled arm still stays in.

We don't do it like in the video (but I LOVE that!!!) but the blanket they are using there (in case you didn't read it, OP), is one by Aden & Anais. Those are the swaddling blankets we use and they are huge! 4ft by 4 ft. We tuck the arms under too, and our babies couldn't wiggle loose in them.

I would say leave him busting out of swaddle. He is definitely trying to do stuff with his arms, including trying to get his hands to the mouth. This can be him trying to sooth himself by sucking on his hand/finger, which he need to learn.

That swaddling method worked incredibly last night!!! He only woke up twice to nurse, and didn't move around and grunt all night long like he usually does. He was calm and quiet! This morning when I did it for naptime, he kept completely still, not fighting me at all, so I guess he likes it!
