husbandry of cattle ? and book rec?

Hi-- we're not off the grid, but BOY are we "country living!"
We're getting some cows for meat, they're belted galloways, little oreos..
what we're getting is a cow/calf pair. the cow is pregnant, and the calf is hers and he's a bull..
my dad used to have cows, but we always had just one bull and all the calves were sold, so I don't know about breeding these guys.
Is it acceptable for the bull calf to breed its own mother or if the new calf turns out to be a heifer, is that acceptable?
OR, does anyone have a book that they can recommend about cattle?
many thanks!

I don't have any books to recommend at the moment, but I'm sure if you search the forum there will be some previously mentioned.
I think that looking into having a technician come and breed via artificial insemination would be a wise choice! I know that it's not very costly/time consuming, but you do have to watch for heats and have them there at just the right time, whereas a bull does that all for you. Another option would be to rent/borrow a bull when his services are needed, but that may not work, depending on your situation.
I hope that helps!
