Oh my god, someone reassure me...please?

So, I'm changing my son's diaper today and discover that he ate (and passed) a small shard of ceramic. I had dropped a small sign that I had up and it chipped. I THOUGHT I'd found all of the pieces (there were a couple of tiny ones...like I said, just a chip) Well, leave it to my son to prove me wrong.

Reassure me that it's nothing to really worry about? There was no blood and he doesn't seem in any pain (well, other than teething) Maybe some stories about weird stuff your LO's ate that turned out fine?

I feel horrible.

call your ped would be my advice.

A friend of mine's son ate a carpet staple at 8 months old. They saw it happen, took him to emerg, x-rays were taken, the staple was clearly inside him, hospital said to take him home, monitor him & inspect poops. They never found the staple, but it's not inside him anymore!

s *it* happens
The fact that there's no bloods sounds good, and that he's passed it is good. Is there a nurses hotline or something like that you could call and ask to make sure?

We don't have a regular ped that I can call...I can see if there's a hotline or something. (stupid military healthcare. *I* don't have a regular doc either)

He seems fine (and has for the past couple of days) Yeah, no blood and no tearing or anything around his anus...I'm assuming that the bread he's been eating helped. (He's been all about bread products lately)

and if it matters: It wasn't a sharp pointed piece...it was a flat piece

My two year old (When he was about 20 months) ate a marble that wasnt completly round. You know those things you put in the bottome of a flower vase to make it look pretty? We didnt know he ate it until the DCP called me at work to inform me of something that came out in his stool. She saved it for me and I still have it (Im going to put it in his baby book along with his first teeth and first haircut for when hes older ) To this day I cant figure out how the kid got it down his throat. Its pretty big, and he has the highest gag reflex of anyone ive ever met. Corn casserole by Beech nut used to make him gag!

I agree with other PPs, if hes passed it, theres no blood, and hes not in any pain, I would have to say your in the clear.

My daughter ate what looked like a piece of a circuit board. No clue where that could have come from. No blood, so we just went on with life and haven't had a problem since.

Now I know that a dog is not really comparable to a child, but still... if this makes you feel any better...

My dog eats ANYTHING. We have been to the vet so many times because he ate something.

Miraculously he has passed everything he has eaten with no problems, this includes:

Carpet, rocks, a nail, eye glasses, a DVD remote, a computer motherboard, his first and last plastic toy, popcicle stick, his own collar including the plastic buckle, many types of fabric, fake flowers, a makeup brush, I could go on and on and on. And this is a little dog, he is a mini dachshund.

We have learned to feed bread, and inspect poo. If everything comes out, and there is no bleeding, then its ok.

Sounds like your LO is fine! I cant imagine how much more I would freak out if my baby ate something than the dog... but if he passed it ok, I would just still keep an eye on him for any other pieces, and call the Ped to let them know that it happened.

My daughter was 6 months old at Christmas time (5 years ago). We found wrapping paper in her diaper! We were trying to keep her from eating the wrapping paper Christmas morning, but I guess we missed some. She passed atleast 3 small pieces (smaller than a dime) of wrapping paper.

oh! I also wanted to add that my little sister ate a penny when she was 1. No harm done. My mom just had to watch poop for a couple days LOL!

DD2 loved to chew on the wood chips at the park when she was a baby. I could watch her like a hawk and she would still end up with a mouthful, a number of them did end up being swallowed from time to time. They just came out the other end, no problem.

This thread is so funny. I love the dog post. I dropped my contact this morning and at the point of giving up on trying to find it, I realized I couldn't quit because my DS would most certainly find it and I did not want to see my contact in his poop. Invariably, my DH would be the one to find it in the poop and he'd be mad.

I can beat you for grossness, Fraser ate some cat poo the other day, seriously it was the most gross thing I've ever seen and I was so scared! But I called the NHS direct line and they said it was ok as long as it was fresh, it might cause a bit of tummy upset but basically nothing to worry about. But I still worried, as you would! He seems fine now though.

my little brother once hid under a picnic tables in the park and ate spider nests and bird poops off the table. Mum wa so freaked out.....he's is still with us and about to complete a PhD in pure maths at age 24.....so no harm done I guess!

I have Tricare Standard for that reason. Depending on the Post, there should be an urgent care clinic.
