You could make breadsticks a head of time, freeze them and just thaw and serve. Crackers
veggie sticks
garlic bread

We eat popcorn with soup around here. Airpopped with a tiny bit of butter and salt.

For chili and most stews I serve cornbread

For clear soups like chicken, onion, beef and barley, etc I serve biscuits

For creamy soups like split pea, lentil, chowders, etc I serve rustic italian or sourdough bread.

Of course with tomato is had to be xtra sharp cheddar grilled cheese sanwich of soft whole wheat or even better dark rye!

I'll often put out a plate with crackers, cheese, and sliced apple.
Or carrot and celery sticks with salad dressing to dip into. Similarly, you could cook green beans to dip, or do edamame.

Sometimes I'll make a quick waldorf-ish salad with celery, apple, grapes, nuts and simple dressing.

Biscuits! Just plain ol' biscuits taste GREAT with chili. We generally make bread bowls to go with our chili (DH makes the bread bowls, I make the chili), but they're pretty time intensive. We discovered by accident that biscuits are reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally good for dipping in chili (or any other tomato-based soup, I'd guess). We didn't have anything in the house, the store was out of bread (welcome to Bush Alaska), and dinner was a half hour away. DH whipped up a batch of biscuits (having a DH who loves to bake is a serious advantage in life) and YUM YUM YUM.

Corn Bread
Crusty Sour Dough
Turkey Sandwiches
Grilled Cheese
Salad

It really depends on what kind of soup it is.

thanx for the cornbread reminder, i always forget how easy it is, just have to allow for baking time. pita chips are a good idea too. popcorn is a BIG fave in this house that ds & dh love to eat together. love biscuits too, they just seem to taste stale after a day or two and seeing that we are a small family we'd take a while to eat a whole batch. maybe i could just freeze some?!!?
