Kanga mamas?

I just got my kanga(african torso wrap carrier and otherwise multi purpose fabric), in the mail today

It is beeautiful! I wrapped dd on my back today and she loved it and I was so excited to have her on my back so quickly and easily. My mainstay is a back carry with a wrap, but I've been wanting something really quick for running into the store, etc.

So...any other Kanga using mamas here? Do you have any tips for me on wearing my baby this way? I have to say I'm not used to how low she sits, but it is remarkably comfy for my shoulders.

I don't have an actual kanga, but I do enjoy torso carries I've used a towel to do a kanga carry, or I sometimes use my short wrap to do a torso carry. I think I may order a kanga in the spring though, it'll be much cooler for warm weather

That's so cool that you've been making a carrier out of what you already have! I have been finding that it's a lot of pressure on my boobs, but this is the main way of babywearing in a lot of Africa. What do you think? I'm a 34 DDD(while nursing which I am), my dd is 8 mos and about 20lbs. Is it just something to get used to maybe?

I agree it's got to be the best carrier for hot weather!

I try and make sure the top "rail" is high up across my chest (like as high as it will go under my arms), and try to make sure that all the fabric is spread evenly across my breasts. If one section is tighter than the rest it will create pressure. Lots of women with larger breasts use them fine, but just watch in case you are prone to plugged ducts.

I used my DIY kanga a lot for household chores. I just tie it over my breasts (I have large breasts) and tuck the ends back under the rail to make a little cushion. It was just faster tying it that way. I love the way it sits the baby down lower. I usually tucked DD feet in. I like how it kept her head steady even when she slept.

Elaynesmom, thanks for the tip about tying the top rail as high as it will go. I'm going to give that a try. Thankfully I'm not prone to plugged ducts...though I did wonder with how much pressure seems to be on my breasts.

Moonstarfalling, I love how quick it is too I have dd on my back sleeping right now in the kanga. I'm used to a wrap so how low she sits really is something to get used to. But her head is actually more secure while she sleeps like this. No flopping! It gives my shoulders a nice break.

You shouldn't feel too much pressure on your breasts. MAke sure you're engaging your abs and lifting your chest up and drawing your shoulders back too. That will help... you can't slouch in a torso carry... lol. Sounds like a workout at first but you will get used to it and it will become second nature. Also make sure that the center and lower part of the kanga is snug so that its holding the baby close to your body. That will also help with the pressure on the boobs feeling.
