REALLY positive school visit today!!

I finally got my "official" visit to the school that we're planning on sending Connor to when he turns 3 in March. It is FANTASTIC!!!!! It's an integrated public school preschool class, but there is a full time interpreter in the room and 3 other hard of hearing kids (2 who use sign, one who is verbal). There's also a full time parapro and the head teacher. The parapro and teacher sign some (pretty decently!) and so does every other kid in the class (just because they're around so much sign)! I met the speech therapist and she also signs, AND she was familiar with Connor's syndrome even!

I got a really good vibe from everyone, they were all fantastic, very friendly and open to me. The room was big and open, there were pictures of people signing everywhere. The interpreter really got the HoH kids going during music time, she was signing and singing and dancing and the kids were, too.

It is everything Connor needs...a verbal environment where his signs will be acknowledged, where everything will be offered to him both verbally and in sign, where the other kids will understand his signs...where he won't be the "weird" kid that can't talk right!

I'm sold.

BUT...the school is out of district. SO, we have to convince our local school to send him there. Which I think we can do easily enough, the local school has no interpreter, and no other HoH kids. Connor is very introverted when around fully verbal kids, but he's right in the thick of things when he's around kids that know even a little sign. So not only will his access to communication be lower at our local school, but his social/emotional development will be greatly hindered.

I already broached the topic during our first transition meeting, so the school knows that I'm requesting that he be sent out of district. They seemed to agree easily enough, but I'm very nervous that they're just dragging their feet and will drop a bomb on me at the last minute and say he can't go out of district. We'll see I guess.

But man, to see that environment...it is MADE for Connor!!!

That's great! Lots of luck.

Does the school go thru summer? My DS turns 3 in May and I've received conflicting info on whether he'll get services thru summer (I imagine I'll have more confirmation after our meeting in Feb.)

I was just wondering how likely it is to get SN preschool through CDS in the summer.

Quadruple LIKE!!!

I'm so glad for you and Connor. Are the logistics of Connor and Ian's school "delivery/acquisition" (like those contractor-like words?!) going to work out easily? Is it WAY out of district? Or is there a chance that Ian could go there too?

I have no idea...I hope that he can at least get some therapy over the summer (st and ot) but the school isn't year round. I have heard of some kids getting services, I don't know what qualifies...

I have no idea how all the transportation logistics are going to work. School starts at 8:30, so I *could* drop him off. It's about 35 minutes from our house, and about 10 minutes PAST my work, so I could drive him there and go into work later (my job is very flexible). I'd just have to work later in the afternoons. And I'd have to give up my gym time in the mornings (believe it or not, I actually LIKE my 6am workouts!!)

And I *suppose* I could leave from work, drive to his school, and take him home as my lunch break, but that would take an entire hour to do that. And add more time to when I'm at work (I'm allowed to work through lunch and not take a lunch break to only work 8 hours, but if I take a lunch break then I have to work 9 hours).

I don't see how we could get Ian in that district, our district would never pay to send him there without a need. And the regular preschool in that district is a full day program, but I'm only sending Connor half day.

Ian's bus picks him up at 1pm, so if we have to transport Connor, it would be cutting it close, but there should be enough time for my husband to get Connor and then get home before Ian's bus comes.

Of course, my husband is hoping to be back at school full time starting in March (he took this term off since Gavin is so young and because it's winter when Connor is most likely to be sick). So we'll have a nanny here. No idea if the nanny can/will drive or will have a car that can fit three carseats.

So there's a whole lot of logistics to figure out still!!! But the school is obligated to provide transportation, even out of district. If we transport, they have to reimburse mileage. But I'd prefer that they transport, at least when he comes home at lunch. Otherwise I'll be working until 6pm every night, getting home at 6:30 (at the earliest) and that's just less time I have with my kids

It sounds like a fantastic school for Connor!

I hope you get the transportation issue figured out. Wish I could offer some help but we drop off and pick up DD at school.
