How do I know if my raw pecans went bad?

They have a funky smell and flavor, but I'm not sure what pecans normally smell/taste like. I'm feeling like maybe they're rancid. I did not store them in the freezer, should I have? Thanks!

How old are they? If they smell/taste funky, chances are good they're bad.

Black/dark spots, oil on the surface and of course a bad smell all mean the nuts are bad.

I would store them in the freezer, myself. I find raw pecans to be pretty delicate and don't last long at all. I even had some go bad while in the freezer last year; they must have been on their way before I put them in, but that was a surprise!
