We use plastic bags, but I'm not scared of plastic in general so take it for what it's worth.

Same here. I don't heat in plastic but if I tried to use all glass containers in my freezer I'd go nuts and I'd have a serious space problem.

Yeah, another vote for avoiding it where you can, but the freezer aint the place. I'm just not a fan of freezing in glass - I'm too worried about it breaking either from simple expansion or (more likely perhaps), me being careless and accidentall dropping something on it (I have a tendency to rather literally "throw" stuff into the freezers

I avoid plastic for the most part, but I don't think it would be bad to use them in your freezer as long as you don't heat the food up in that bag. The only alternative that I could think of is butcher paper or wax paper.

I have heard that plastic bags break down in the freezer, but frankly, they're so convenient I use them anyway. Just don't heat stuff up in them, and try to cycle through your freezer stuff in a reasonable time period. (Good for freezer burn too)

yeah, I'm afraid I'm with the PPs here. I just haven't been able to get away from plastic completely for the freezer. I do use some glass canning jars but it they don't work well for everything.

One thing I have done is started buying plastic wrap and freezer bags from our coop in a brand called "Natural Value". They are at least PVC and plasticizer free, so it is a little better than some others. Not crazy expensive either, so it works for me I think you can get their products online as well if your local stores don't carry them.

ETA - Oh yeah, and I never heat in plastic either! Nor do I put things away in plastic when still warm/hot. Let it cool all the way, even if I have to put things in the refrigerator overnight before I transfer them to plastic to freeze.

We use plastic in our freezer, for meats and such. I remember reading somewhere that when plastic defrosts it releases toxins so we always take thing out of the plastic to defrost.

we still use the freezer bags, but now i wrap meats in butcher paper first.. it's not expensive, and i tend to use the microwave (i know, i know..) to defrost things, and meat doesn't stick to the butcher paper.. also it doesn't touch the plastic that way. we have lots of deer and such wrapped only in the butcher paper as well, and it's not freezerburned (yet).

We do this when using plastic bags. Otherwise we use glass jars from store bought applesauce or other items as well as canning jars.
