oh no...i think i've made one too many mistakes

my covers smell! my diapers were smelly for a bit but i THINK i finally got rid of it. now my problem is my thirsties and wonderwrap covers, mostly my thirsties.

my thirsties were smelling like urine every time 5mo DS peed. and then that smell would penetrate to his clothing, so i was having to change his clothing, too. i washed out the thirsties really well in cold water, then let them soak a bit in hot water, then washed them out again. they still smelled a bit - my husband thought they smelled like wet dog, and i agreed - but i figured if i let them hang dry outside it might take care of it. when i went to bring them in they smelled like a little kid whose been playing outside all day! you know that smell - gross! it's like the smell is STUCK in there! no matter how much i wash it, or with what detergent, it still. stinks.

to top that off, my son completely leaked through his thirsties cover this afternoon and got his onesie soaked. i got the prefold used and i'm guessing if it is the brand of prefold (i don't know what brand it is), because my green mountain prefolds don't ever leak. so i can get rid of that prefold - but why did it leak through the cover??? is it possible that i washed the prefold in water that was too hot, and that is the problem? our water gets up to 145 degrees. can that ruin a cover?

my wonderwrap covers are brand new and still smell like plastic, and are also smelling like urine but not as bad. but that combined with the plastic smell is just awful.

i've only been CDing full-time for two weeks, and i have to remind myself it's okay to make mistakes - but i feel like a failure!! first-child syndrome i guess. and the poor thing's got a slight diaper rash too...but that's another topic... ugh!

Have you tried machine washing and drying the covers on hot? PUL needs heat to reseal tiny holes. It is meant to be washed and dried at high temps.

Also, if the stink holds on, you can try soaking the covers in some warm water with a few tablespoons of baking soda, which will help to eliminate odors. Make sure they're rinsing completely too-detergent residue left behind can cause covers to hold onto odors and stink.
