What on earth could this possibly mean? Olive oil mayonnaise

I was reading labels for mayonnaise (which we actually almost never eat, but needed for something tonight)... and on the olive oil mayonnaise ingredients, half the list had asterisks by them... so I looked for the other asterisk to see what it meant... and it said that the ones with the asterisk meant "ingredients not in mayonnaise". What does this mean? One of the things with the asterisk was the OLIVE OIL itself!

So, does this mean there's not actually olive oil in there? or does it mean that those things aren't in "regular" mayonnaise... and why does that matter enough to have it on the label?

I'm SO confused... but I know it's gotta mean SOMETHING...

Like this?:

Ingredients
Water, Olive Oil, Soybean Oil, Vinegar, Modified Food Starch, Sugar, Maltodextrin, Eggs, Contains less than 2% of Salt, Mustard Flour, Dried Onions, Dried Garlic, Natural Flavor, Enzyme Modified Egg Yolk, Beta Carotene* (Color), Lactic Acid*, Potassium Sorbate* and Calcium Disodium Edta As Preservatives, Phosphoric Acid* *Ingredient not Normally Found In Mayonnaise Contains: Egg.

It looks like it might be for things that are not in most other mayo. These are the ingrediants for Kraft btw.

No... it said "ingredients not in mayonnaise" verbatim. this blog talks about it sorta... http://anevenhalfdozen.blogspot.com/...r-escapes.html My friend noted that it's "mayonnaise dressing" and she thinks the other part is what they added to make it "dressing"... I didn't see that it said "dressing" on the one I looked at, but I admit I didn't buy it...

There's a federal definition for mayonaise, like the one for ice cream or lemonade. That's why miracle whip is "salad dressing" not mayonaise. They're trying to get around that with that label.

Nice. The food industry may just send me to the loony bin yet...

The more I know that more frustrated I am with our food supply & the less I trust it. I just make my own mayo now because it is impossible to find a decent one! I'd rather my family eat the raw eggs then the chemical cocktails in the store bought stuff. It takes a little practice but it is easy once you get it, the trick is adding the oil really, really slowly. I use my emersion blender, works like a charm!
