Have you tried placenta smoothie? - Page 3

I just had my first placenta smoothie last night after giving birth to my second son (our first UC) and it was delicious ... I drank the whole blender's worth of smoothie. DP made it, so I'm not positive of measurements ... but it was about 1/3 of the raw placenta, a container of blueberry soy yogurt, frozen strawberries, and orange juice. I feel awesome. No worries about it being "raw". The placenta was rather difficult to hack through with our poultry shears (stainless steel and boil sterilized as I was laboring). I'm not really a fan of meat but there was no meat-y taste to it. There were a few mucousy chunks in the smoothie (which probably could have been blended longer, but it was late and DP didn't want to wake the 3 oldest kids sleeping upstairs).

And I really feel wonderful ... my contractions are mild (even with two nurslings tandeming), hardly any bleeding, energy levels through the roof, mood is great.

I cut mine up into chunks then froze it on a cookie sheet. I then took the pieces and put in a freezer bag. everyday for the first week I grabbed a couple chunks of placenta (there was 14) a scoop of strawberry protein mix and blended it with a glass of milk. I did not taste the placenta at all and there were no chunks although I tried not to think about what I was drinking because it did gross me out a little. I did notice that drinking this kind of made me feel weird (like I took a downer)

Of course I will! I am due March 8, but I hope it will be more like the 1st. I have never gone past EDD before.

I am a vegetarian, and I hope it doesn't offend anyone for me to say that the smell of meat literally makes me sick to my stomach.

I cut ds's placenta into small chunks--about 2" by 2", and froze them on cookie sheets similarly to how you might freeze berries. once they were frozen solid, I stored the chunks in a ziplock.

I put one or two chunks in the blender with rice milk, bananas, frozen peaches and frozen strawberries. I never tasted anything except smoothie, but I definitely felt the placenta working.

This sounds like a better plan than making a huge batch of smoothie and then freezing it in cups. If I had it to do over again I might have done that instead of trying to cook it after a few days and then getting SO grossed out by it and not being able to eat any more of it.

I drained the excess blood out of the veins, cut off the membranes and cord and a small calcified piece and then cut it into chunks and froze. I made my smoothies with 3-4 frozen strawberries, 1/4 can of frozen oj, 1/2 cup of soy milk, 1/2 tspn vanilla extract and one placenta cube. You can see the tissue that has been blended and I always blended the placenta first so I KNEW I was only eating strawberries by the frozen chunk. I was still pretty mentally squicked out but it tasted great and did WONDERS for me. My milk was in 24 hours later, PP bleeding stopped really fast, and for the first time I had NO ppd or baby blues. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

I am hoping this is the case for me. Everyone has definitely convinced me. I am going to do it.

I like to dissect the placenta into slivers the size of your baby finger....make sure you take off any membrane and rinse well to remove blood clots. You need a good sharp knife. Freeze these in a single layer on a wax paper-lined cookie sheet. Once frozen, put them in a good quality self-zip freezer bag, squeezing the air out as you close it. For the first week postpartum, make berry smoothies once or twice a day, adding a couple of frozen pieces of placenta. You won't taste it! It's great, especially if you have a squimish hubby, to get a friend, doula, etc to do the dissection and freezing so you can rest.

From my experience, this ensures that even women who've hemmorhaged recover quickly. The hormones in the placenta probably help, as does a high amount of bioavailable iron. Plus, by making a ritual out of drinking the smoothies you are ensuring you get some decent nutrition into you (of course you will need good meals too!)

Most, if not all mammals eat their placenta, serving two functions: keeping away predators and re-energizing mama.

I made these smoothies after my third baby was born last August and couldn't taste a thing!
