Nursing in front of coworkers? - Page 2

I brought my baby to the office for the first six months so I nursed him there all the time. My office is really crunchy and family friendly, though, and everyone was super supportive. People would ask me for breast milk for eye infections, that kind of stuff. I did try to be somewhat modest about it. I usually nursed him at my desk, which is somewhat tucked back, and I'd use a blanket, not over DS's head, but just over the exposed breast.
Raunchy jokes are pretty common in my office -- we've all worked together a long time and get along really well. One time the production guy was like, "Hey, that baby's head is blocking my view!"

Only after we had finished talking and he was about to leave, he paused and asked, "What's that noise?" and I sweetly replied "It's the breast pump." He turned the brightest red you've ever seen and left at the speed of light.
HAHAHA what a great story!!

LOL sounds like a fun place to work

Well I went to lunch Friday but we were a little rushed & DS didn't get hungry during the short time we were there! So I didn't even end up having to decide. But honestly I still think I would've been uncomfortable with it... especially 'cause I ended up sitting right next to my (male) boss, who paid for lunch for the designers. I wish I was more comfortable with the idea of it (though it really doesn't matter considering how infrequently I see these people in person now). I already feel like the oddball for bringing baby with me when the few others that are parents would NEVER bring their kid along. *sigh* I wish the world was more baby-friendly.

i work in a baby room at a child dev center ... one time, there were three moms in there, two sitting in rocking chairs, one on a floor seat, breastfeeding their babies, and i was sitting at another chair pumping. boobs were everywhere and not one coworker blinked an eye.

even the dads who pick up have gotten used to it and i think it is so great!

I never have. It just wierds me out! Other than at work I will NIP anywear. And my boss nursed her babies and was very supportive- she Overnighted BMilk to the US from Korea for goodness sake!

But mentally, I just can't do it. I am (supposedly LOL... ignore the snot on my blouse) a professional, and I just can't get over it. Luckily I only have been in this situation once or twice, like at a company picnic. I don't normally have DS with me aroudn coworkers. It was easy enough to just plan around it. I have never needed to give a bottle.

Huh. It's been a while for me (*wracking brain*)...I can't remember if I ever actually nursed in front of my coworkers. I do know I would nurse in front of them. My immediate coworkers were (I'm self-employed now) MDCers. So it was a no-brainer.

I remember coming in to my office with baby DD during maternity leave to gather some materials and nursing her at my desk, which was in an open-plan office, knowing full well my (older, male, unpredictable) boss might barge in at any second. I didn't really care, I guess. I knew I had the high ground.

I feel the same as the op, I just don't feel right nursing around my co-workers.
I nip and have done so without my cover since dd was 7mo old. My dd is now 16 mo old and I just recently stopped pumping at work, everyone knew that I was doing that, no big deal. But if dd comes to visit, or I bring her in with me on a day off and she starts asking for it, I don't feel comfortable nursing her out in the open. I'll go back to a meeting room where I can shut the door or something more private. I work in a professional office and I just don't feel comfortable pulling out the booby in front of my co-workers.
Btw, I work with mostly women, but we have mostly male managers. I wouldn't have any problem nursing in front of the women outside of the work setting.

Funny you mention it. The only time I felt uncomfortable with NIP and the only time I went to another room was while at work. I did nurse a couple of times in the main office, but for the most part I closed my office door to nurse.

I took both babies to work with me until they were 6 months. It was a very family friendly employer, but very conservative christian. I think my main reason for feeling uncomfortable was my office manager was a very spunky, outspoken woman who bragged about never breastfeeding her 4 children. I always felt uneasy doing it around her. Like she was judging me. It was probably an inaccurate perception, but it did effect my decision to go to my office to nurse.
