You answered your own question. Because the child's wearing a diaper.

Great story. Thanks. You made my day, and I'm sure DH will love to hear this story as soon as he gets home. That is certainly one of those parenting moments where you don't condone your child's actions, but you really can't be angry about it either.

Very young children who aren't fully potty trained/learned don't have that same control. Yes he can sign that he needs the potty but he can't hold it for long enough to make it to that bathroom. And sometimes you're in a situation where you can't immediately find a bathroom or a suitable place to potty a child. What if you're boarding the plane, halfway down the aisle and blocked in on all sides? Or on the bus on the way to the plane.

Why is it better to let a child poo all over the floor and his clothing than in a diaper? If you can practice EC successfully then that's great but I really don't see how a diaper as back up in certain situations is a bad thing.
My understanding is that he signed that he had to go and if his mom had been allowed to take him within a reasonable ammount of time than he would have made it. My 7 yr old tends to hold it until the last min. and then it is urgent that we get him to a toilet or he might wet himself. If the seatbelt light is on I have a wee man in my bag, drape a blanket over his lap and he goes for poop I think I would just take him depending on how long the light had been on (sometimes they leave it on the whole flight even if it isn't that bumpy) but I wouldn't think oh I should put a diaper on him when we travel because it might not be convenient when he has to go. He is 7 and I am not sure why it has to be different for an 18 month old, etc.
If someone wants to use backup that is there preference and I do sometimes for my 13 month old but have flown 2x w/ her in underwear and she has done great. I just hate the immediate go to reaction of if he had a diaper on you wouldn't have had to worry about it.

first, every kid is different. hawk has a nice long lead before poops. he also likes to take his time pooping. he takes after me in that way. LOL

so, when he signalled, i knew that we had a good amount of time at the first signal, which is when i started the dialogue about going. once we got all fo the "no", hawk's signals were getting more urgent, and i tried to explain to him that we couldn't go there. and then, he tried to go himself, and i did try to stop him. after all, it got all over his pants because i pulled them back up after he managed to get them half down.

it was like a comedy of errors, and if some of you can't see that and feel indignant or something, then obviously we don't share a similar humor.

beyond this, i'll tell you more pooping in security stories.

at SFO, we got bumped from WEd to Fri for our flight. SO, we'd gone through security to go to our gate only to be turned back.

that security run was very similar to Philly in a lot of ways, except that when hawk signaled, i asked if we could go to the bathroom and they said sure. DH stayed with the bags in the special checking area, i went out of security into the main lobby area (pre-security), with my baby, our passports and boarding passes, and a diaper bag. it was a catch, so no need to change the diaper, but you never know if there's a near miss or what.

then, i met DH in security when we were done--having gone through security *again*. i was not unhappy to go through security twice to meet my DSs need, nor is this any complaint about the TSA. they were very efficient and friendly overall (much more so than TSA at Los Angeles where they are just, i don' tknow, rude? mean? something. it puts me off, they don't even smile at you when you say "good morning" and smile and give them your passport!).

so, he pooped then.

we get bumped, have a day in SF, and then get back to the plane on friday. again, going through SFO security, hawk signals, but this time we manage to get through DS and I) and DH gets flagged and so i continue forwrad and take hawk because he was signalling to go. DH met us at the gate.

once we were nearly to auckland, we pottied hawk before landing.

FWIW, we caught everything from 2 pm PST to 4:30 pm PST (the current writing of this) and used only one trainer for this whole long trip!

anyway, we pottied him before landing. we pottied him once he was off the plane. we pottied him before we went through passport control, and immediately after (that process took about 45 minutes, and in the AM--or whatever is his "am" and since he slept 12 hrs of the 13 hr flight, if igured it would be like an AM for him--he tends to go every hr (pee, of course).

then, we went to pick up our baggage before customs. i pottied him once we got our bags, and then we went to customs.

customs can have one or two parts. for most folks, it will have one whereby you get your passport checked and your declaration card checked off, and then your bags go to x-ray. because we were carrying a lot of "biosecurity" items, i knew that we woul dahve to do the second part of customs--biosecurity. which you do between declaration and x-ray.

when we spoke with the custom's officer, i told him that my baby may need to go to the toilet before we finished with biosecurity, based on the lines and the fact that we had 8 bags and the various biosecurity items sprinkled between them. luckily, they didn't ask us to unpack all of what we declared, only the items that concerned them most, but it was still a bit of a challenge! LOL

anyway, we finally get up to biosecurity table, and he signals for poop! i ask the officer there, and she points to a toilet for public use available in that area. i take him--leaving the bags with DH--and he just has gas, but potties a bit anyway (pee again).

we then get passed through to x-ray (a drum was taken to be fumigated--which we expected), and then we have to go to the office of biosecurity to pay for the fumigation. no biggie.

again, it's another 45 minutes to get to the second biosec office, and so i went to potty him again while DH paid the bill ($15 NZD btw--like $8 american). then, we went to get into the line for domestic transfers. . .to put our bags back on the plane.

that is a long line too, and there's a toilet there, so mid-way thrugh that line (too about 45 mins), i take him again.

finally, bags are on the way to the plane and we then walk (about 15 mins) between international and domestic terminals (i recommend this to anyone coming to NZ!) and we get to our gate. i get us tea and muffins, adn then DH takes DS ot the toilet. then takes him again before we board the plane. then again once we're off (hr long flight), and then again before we leave the air port with our bags.

so, all in all a good trip, even though we had this--what i consider to be funny--experience at the start. messy, but funny. LOL

oh and FWIW, hawk pooped once we got to the hotel. we'd ordered breakfast and it had just come when he starts pointing to his bottom (which is his signal when he doesn't know where the bathroom is, otherwise he points at the bathroom), and so DH took him and it was a great catch.

luckily, we're all relaxing now-- a diaper free nap for hawk, a shower and such for ryan, and i'm about to take my shower. then zoning out with some crappy NZ TV and then dinner and an early bed time.

What an adventure!

FWIW 'back up' never worked for us. If dd needed to pp she would rather have nothing on her bum to do it. Occe a kid is used to not having poo stuck to their bum they tend to avoid situations where that might happen - hence the pulling down of trainers or underwear.
