diaper rash- strange

My son is 12 weeks and last night his first diaper rash came on suddenly. We left for the ped's office for a baby wellness exam, Ped examined him completely, we left and went home.

Once at home I changed his diaper which he had soiled on the drive home from the office. I was near our kitchen so grabbed a paper towel with water to clean his tush.
It was a plain white, no dye paper towel (Target brand) and just tap water.

Normally to cleanse his behind I use plain tap water and cotton washable baby wash clothes. Although I usually blot with a tissue first to absorb some poop.

Occasionally I will use a 7th Generation wipe or an Earth's Best wipe, but usually a baby wash cloth and tap water.

He's never had any reaction to anything I have used. We use cloth diapers as well as sposies (Earths Best).

So two thoughts, I would like to bounce off of all of you-

1) could some bacteria or yeast have transferred onto my son's diaper area from the ped's office, and just caused a fast and furious reaction (within 1/2 an hour if so).

2) could that wet paper towel have done this? He is used to having me blot with dry paper tissues, and never had a reaction.

He's EBF, never reacted to anything in my diet, and even so I haven't had anything new or different than the usual fare.

So thoughts please.

My son's behind has been absolutely blemish free until now. This just makes no sense

My 7 mo DS has a very sensitive tush. If he's left in dirty diaper longer than a couple mins he gets sore rash. His diaper rash appears out of no where and goes often as quickly as it appears. I often use organic coconut oil on him as it is antibacterial AND anti yeast. I doubt it was the papertowel, unless your babe is verrrrrry sensitive. Hope his bum is better today!

Was this the longest time he's been left in a poopy diaper?

My ds has to have his bottom changed soon after a bowel movement or he gets rashy.

Also, are you sure you got it all? How long after you washed him up did the rash appear?

Thanks so much for your replies! The rash is gone now thankfully, it resolved by yesterday. Per your question, he was in the soiled dipe I suppose 15-20 minutes from car ride to time of diaper change. He has never had a rash when awoke in a soiled diaper from nap or night sleeping. I suppose also if he caught something from the exam table while lying naked it probably would not resolved this quickly. Maybe it was the paper towel. Oh well, it shall remain a mystery! Glad it's gone now though.
Thanks again for your help.

If you've only ever used unbleached organic wipes with him this may be the cause. Those papaer towels have traces of bleach in the paper...I don't know, but my housekeeper, bless her cotton socks, washed my cloth diapers in bleach, and even though I rinsed them FIVE TIMES I could still smell the bleach and lo and behold DD got a rash when I used them.

So...maybe that was the culprit.

Here's to another 12 months of a rash free bum for you and your LO.

It's most likely from sitting in a soiled diaper. Just because it doesn't usually irriate him doesn't man it won't ever.

My vote is the bleach, too. My DS is so sensitive to bleach/chlorine that if anything touches his bottom (bleached wipes, chlorine diapers, etc) he'll break out in an almost instant rash. We have to use non chlorinated things for everything with him.
