can we talk about sensory issues?

Hi,

I mostly lurk here and read tons of helpful info in these threads. I could use some specific help this time though.

Ds is 6 and has food sensitivities. He's on the GF/CF diet and has been for several years, which has greatly improved his overall behavior and cleared up his allergy shiners.

Lately, though, he's been crying and screaming every time he wears shoes. The seam in his socks irritate him and we've gone out and purchased tons of special socks and several pairs of new, high quality shoes and he still screams, rants, yells, and becomes irritable every day he has to wear them. He has to wear them when we go to a gym with friends. We homeschool and he loves playing sports and being active there with his friends, but only after screaming and yelling over his shoes and socks. Every single time. For an hour.

He's also been complaining about headaches, especially in the car (I know this can be normal, but it's suddenly come up and I'm concerned). Whenever he gets sick, it's a headache first.

Anyone have experience with these issues? We are not into western meds. I've tried acupuncture/chinese herbal meds in the past that cleared up his allergy shiners and improved his digestion, but am wondering if we should go that route again or try something else, like NAET and/or a chiropractor?

He's a highly sensitive child who shows signs of giftedness, though I've never had him tested. I strongly believe the vaxs he received his frst year before I knew better messed up his system, so we may have heavy metal issues here.

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Check out the Special Needs forum. We have an active monthly support thread there for parents of children with sensory issues. Some of us have sensory issues ourselves and can share a first-person perspective.

Thank you earthmama! I've been back and forth between these 2 forums and I wondered which was the best place to ask about treatment possibilities for my ds.

off to check out sn...

My son has had sensory issues, different things, but for us it is heavy metals, it's the mercury in my amalgam fillings. I got my amalgams out almost 2 years ago and am chelating myself and my kids with DMSA and ALA. If you want to read more about that approach, there's a Chelating Mamas thread in Dental, I found it a useful thread when I was still trying to figure out "Where the heck do we go from here?"

My DD used to get upset about things and have a really hard time calming down, I don't know if there's a better description, but for her that was a manifestation of liver stress. For us nutritional supplements were a biggie for reducing that. DS didn't do that, but it was things like spinning, movement-type things, sometimes mouthing that was odd. And again, it seems to be when too much, whether metals or weird chemicals or both, is mobilized and his liver can't keep up, that's when those come back.

I was unclear from your first post if it's the combo of shoes and socks that upset him, or does he get that way from both alone? My younger dd has sensory issues and she hates to wear socks with shoes. Socks on their own at home are fine, shoes on their own are fine. Not together. She's 8 now, and can wear them together, but for years she didn't, and still doesn't unless she has to, which is mainly when we are hiking/camping.

As for the headaches, he's 6. Is he just starting to read in the car (or reading longer books that take more concentration), or playing handheld games, or w/an iPhone etc... These can lead to carsickness in kids who never had it before. My younger dd has trouble w/these things on windy roads, though not on the highway. But her first symptom is headache, not nausea.

I made this video for other parents. I'm just a mom not a therapist but it seems some ppl find it helps to see some of the techniques. When my son is having trouble sleeping I use the joint compressions and he knocks out. Good that you noticed it so soon. Giftedness seems to go hand in hand with it. Hang in there and I hope this can help some.
take care.
