Magnatiles - question

A quick question for you Magnatiles owners. We have a 32-pc set (the small set) of the clear colors, and love it, and I'm getting another 32-pc set for ds2's 3rd birthday next week to expand the set for him and his 5yo brother!
The question: Should I get more of the same colors, or should I get one of the plain opaque color sets?'
Same colors = continuity in building bigger stuff, fewer arguments between brothers for who gets what?
Different colors = more interesting to play with??

Thanks!!! Placing the order tonight...

Hmmm...we have both, and my kids don't really differentiate between them (a 3 yo and 6 yo). Sometimes the clear ones are windows, but they just use whichever ones they grab. Not sure this helps you, though!

Won't they end up mixed together? We have many sets, all transparent. I don't like the opaque ones (plus Learning Express doesn't carry them.) I love the way light passes through the translucent ones. Especially if you build in front of a window, outside, or on a light table. You get wonderful colored reflections.

Yes, they would surely all be mixed together! Thanks for both your input on this very important decision! Still a bit torn, but... I guess I'll go with more of the same ones!

Interesting to know kids don't really care which they use - I'm sure they're fun either way. I too really enjoy the way light goes through the clear ones. They make nice colors on the carpet on a sunny day. And we experiment with how the colors combine. Anyway, decision made! I'll stop being a magnatiles commercial now!

I rave about Magnatiles all the time. And Santa brought us a huge box of them (100 pieces!) to add to our collection.

We only have the translucent ones, and we have a bunch (thank you santa and MIL). We decided on the translucent ones because of reviews I read elsewhere that said they were much prettier than the opaque.

My son doesn't like the opaque ones. Go clear!

He loves to shine a flashlight through his buildings.

Arg! I just placed the order, and wanted to add some clear ones to our collection, BUT we decided it's worth getting an 100-pc set since it's a better value - but they didn't have the 100-pc set of clear in stock!! (And we have a gift certificate - so I'm not shopping around.) So we got a regular 100-piece set. Well - at least we already have some of the clear, so we get the benefit of those, but also lots more to build with, more colors? I just hope my kids are the kind that don't mind the opaque ones! Thanks for all the opinions, everybody!!

My kids would be happy with either kind. Just having 100 more is amazing. They can build huge structures.

Thanks for your reassuring reply! I'm actually breathing easier after reading it. I'm fretting way too much about this bday gift thing! They will love having sooo many to play with!

They'll love them, I'm sure.

We have both and my kids also don't differentiate between the opaque and the translucent. I'm sure your kids will love them! They are actually a toy that has been played with in my house at least a few times a week for years. I can't help but be a commercial for them also! One of the best toy purchases I have ever made.

My kids got a 100 piece set for Xmas because I couldn't find a 32 piece clear set in the whole country. So now they have over 100 pieces, and still argue over them. But maybe a little less.
