How would you respond if...

a complete stranger offered your kid candy, after you told her it was choking hazard and they couldn't have it and then snuck behind your back to give it to them secretly?

I was shopping the other day and dh was standing outside the store with our two kids looking at the sale racks (near a candy machine) when this happened. He told her no, and when he turned away she tried to pass them the candy. He didn't say anything just gave a pissy look and brought them to me. I was livid but being pregnant and hormonal I would have thrown the candy in her face...lol.

Seriously how do you respond to that?!

Depending on my mood that day I would have either did the nasty look or told the person "I said no" and walk away.

And if they tried to get pissy about it, I'd tell them flat out that they were lucky I caught it before my kid had it in their mouths.

Take the candy and throw it back at the lady Probably not the best response though....

I would have been annoyed, but probably not have said anything and just walked away.

If my dd told me she had the candy then I would have pointed out that I was glad she told me. I would be annoyed with the stranger but I wouldn't have said something. It probably brightened your childrens day even though it was also annoying.

please don't mind my age stereotypes but if it were an elderly man, or woman.. I would have smiled back at them, then when we were out of their site, took the candy and explained that the stranger was trying to be nice, but mommy still said no because (fill in the blank)

If it were anyone else, I would have said the truth, that I said no, my dd has severe allergies, and that giving her candy could have really made her sick. I would have also stated that when a parent says no, there is a reason, and regarless of the reason, no means no.

I would have told my kids that we don't take candy from strangers, and then told the adult that we teach our children to not take candy from any stranger because we don't want them to be confused. Or we pull out the allergy card...there are so many allergies in our family that it's likely true. :

Well if it was that bad of an incident, I would have pretended to be paranoid. I would have collected the candy and started pestering the person with questions while pulling out my cellphone and saying, loudly, "I need to call the police so we can record this event" and basically make it sound as if I knew the person was about to drug my child w/ candy and abduct her.

But I can be kinda mean....

Lol, I wouldn't have went that far. For what it's worth, it wasn't an old person, and they passed it to my youngest who is under two.

Getting candy isn't something that would brighten their day. I just think it was irresponsible, completely disrespectful and potentially dangerous had their been food allergies involved.

I also suspect (based on experience) that she would have listened if the no came from a mom and not the dad.

I would have said "What part of NO didn't you understand?" and thrown it in the closest trash bin.

People like that annoy me.

I would have taken the candy back to the stranger, given her a stern sentence or two about both boundaries and choking hazards, and left it at that.

What I would have wanted to do (Force the candy into her mouth while screaming at her about what an irresponsible and stupid thing that is to do) and what I'd likely do (Say "I said NO THANK YOU!" and walk away) are two totally different things.

Having a son who, up until 2 months ago, was allergic to both dairy and soy, I would have been pretty upset. I don't think people are as aware of food allergies in young children as they could/should be.

Under two, eh?

Sounds like drugged candy and a foiled abduction to me!

It sounds like DH was polite on the first refusal, he didn't need to be polite on the second, IMHO. Sneaking something to an under-two, a baby really, after the parent already pointed out it is dangerous, doesn't warrant a polite response. The stranger should get a response that makes them think twice about ever doing it again with another baby or child.

It depends on my mood. I'm pretty sure I would not have been pleasant about it.

I probably would have handed it back to her nicely. What I say goes with my kids. I would think the person was doing it to be snarky and that's not right. They don't know me and have no right.

Me too.

One night at a neighborhood party, I gave a kid a brownie because I stepped on him. (it seemed like a good idea)

His mom SWEARS she told us they didn't allow him to have sweets. I SWEAR I never heard those words, and he was carrying a Mountain dew. (that's my only defense though) She got all pissy and obnoxious about it. Had she just said "no thank you, he doesn't need any more sweets" I'd have been fine.

So, this lady probably heard dad say "no thank you". But, there's always a possibility that she didn't.
