Buying a new mattress...

Thread Starter
I am currently trying to find the least toxic mattress from Sears Canada (our current mattress is being replaced due to sagging so we have a credit and therefore must buy from sears). Im trying to find the best option, and came across the Sears-O-Pedic "Esquire Natural". It lists silk, wool, and latex foam as ingredients.
Does anyone know whether or not this mattress would be a better choice? Apparently it's now 50% off, but of course, that deal is ending tomorrow.. so the sooner someone can give me some input the better
I was also looking into mattress wrapping.. Any input?
We co-sleep with our 5 month old dd.
TIA

We bought a mattress last year that was described just like yours. It was advertised as being "eco-friendly" etc. However a year later, the mattress is really really hot (which a latex mattress shouldn't be). When I finally got around to calling the factory to find out what its actually made of I was told a polystyrene core with only 2.5 inches of latex. So just be careful about impulse buying and do some research. I didn't realize that mattress stores are a lot like used car salesmen!

Also make sure it's natural latex. That's important for environmental and health reasons. Also, make sure the mattress hasn't been treated w/any flame retardants. The manufacturer should be able to tell you that, though I'm not sure that they disclose it on product labels. I bought an organic natural latex/wool mattress that I am in love with. It was from a store than only sold organic, and they had a great payment plan, so even though it was pricey, it worked out for us. Plus, I need another for 15 years, so I thought of it as a real long-term investment.
