They won't clip his tongue-tie

I have taken him to three different doctors. They all say the same thing. "As long as he is gaining weight, we don't need to clip it."

He is gaining weight, however, my nipples are ripped to shreds. This latch is awful. Making nursing extremely painful when I nurse him and his twin brother.

What do I do now?

What kind of doctors are you going to? Pediatricians, ENTs (ear/nose/throat), pediatric dentists?

Here's what happened with us, if it helps. We had our son's frenulum clipped at three weeks, even though he had consistent weight gain. Like you, I was in a lot of pain everytime I nursed, and after working with a pediatrician who was also a lactation consultant, we decided it was worth clipping. She wouldn't do it in the office, because it wouldn't be covered by insurance (?), so she sent us to a pediatric ENT practice at the local children's hospital. I just called and made the appointment myself, no referral necessary. The ENT took a look at DS's tongue, confirmed the tongue tie, and clipped it right there - there was little to no discussion of weight gain or breastfeeding. The pediatrician did recommend this specific ENT because she knew that he and his partner were willing to do frenectomies in the office without anesthesia. There was also a pediatric dentist she recommended.

My impression is that pediatricians in general can be less sympathetic to the pain that tongue-tie can cause for the mother. On paper, it seemed like everything was going fine for us - DS's weight gain was very good, and his latch even looked fine from the outside - but it was killing me. It took a while after the frenectomy for nursing to get better, I think due to both the damage I had suffered in the meantime and the time it took for DS to get used to his "new" tongue. But it was worth it.

I'd suggest seeing an LC, if you haven't already, because she may be more sympathetic and be able to point you in the right direction towards getting it addressed. Or maybe cut out the middleman and try going straight to a pediatric ENT doctor. Especially with twins, since the pain you're suffering is no doubt affecting your nursing experience with the other babe as well.

OK this happens - what you need to say is that, of course at the moment he's gaining well - new baby, good let down but at the 3-4 month stage when he really needs to stimulate the breast so that he is nourished he won't be able to because he's not had the clip, he must learn how to breastfeed - the sucking motion before it's too late or late enough to cause serious problems, with a bad latch the breast isn't stimulated and then baby starts to loose weight and you want to prevent that - sometimes these guys don't understand the stimulation thing AND that he's hurting you - breastfeeding shouldn't hurt. Hope that this helps keep trying and hopefully you'll find someone who'll be willing to help you out. Good luck

Call an LC in your area and ask for a recommendation for a doctor. Explain the situation to her - I bet she will know a good referral who will help you.

Don’t you just love that medical professionals in this country are eager to cut penile frenulum but won’t touch a baby’s tongue frenulum?

The same thing happened to my boss’ wife with their first baby. She was finally able to find an ear nose and throat doctor that cliped their baby's tounge during a 10 minute office call. Don’t stress yourself out taking him to more doctors, just start calling until you find someone willing to do it…
Good luck!

Try family doctors, dentists etc. You may want to post in "finding your tribe"

what the PP said about ENT is what I had to do. No one wanted to help me b/c DS1 was growing like a weed. By the time we did it at 10 weeks, my breasts were a mess and we'd been sharing thrush for weeks. It was awful! Are you with a PPO? I so you should be able to see an ENT doc without a referral. I had HMO so had to get a referral; I lied to my pedi finally and told her I'd seen a LC who said my latch was fine but the tongue tie was bad enough to warrant clipping (didn't have the $$ for a LC at the time). She referred me and the rest was history. I wished after we did it that it had been done at birth, I will do that if we get another TT baby. Baby cried after it was done, we went home where he slept for 20 min. then latched on like nothing had ever happened. good luck, keep us updated!
