38 weeks, need help with recovery items

Hiya! So with my first I was stunned and did nothing to help with my recovery, it was brutal, my doc told me he stopped counting at about 20 stitches then gave me no info on vaginal care. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas beyond the little ice packs that helped with healing.

So far I have bought a sitz bath and some calendula ointment. What else can I do? I am terrified!

Thank You!

Sounds like my first recovery---endless stitches and at least 3 months of pain. Witch hazel-soaked pads (like Tucks or make your own with gauze pads soaked in a little bowl using your own bottle of wh) on top of my menstrual pad tremendously helped the swelling and bruising---felt very soothing on my stitches. I have read that topical Arnica cream is good for bruising and swelling too.

I have to say, though, that even though babe #2 was the same size as #1 and I still had a second degree tear, recovery was a breeze comparatively!! (just tearing as opposed to epi and 3rd degree tear the first time). I was elated that I could walk comfortably after 2 or 3 days. Still used the witch hazel pads for a week or so, but didn't really need the extra help from arnica. And I only needed pain meds for a day or so.

Here's to a MUCH easier recovery this time!

What about the post partum herbal baths? Does anyone know if they are still appropriate if you have a lot of stitches?

I have a tube of arnica massage cream, would that be the same thing?

And I love the idea of those baths, but I thought baths were off limits until the 7 week check... I am wondering if I made up a batch and just added a small amount to the sitz bath if that would be helpful?

Yes, herbal sitz baths are wonderful! I have a friend who sells them at

The comfrey is especially good. In fact, I always make a up a strong comfrey leaf tea, strain it, and then dip sterile 4x4 gauze pads into it to soak up the good stuff. Then I put them individually in baggies and freeze them. They are like little pieces of a healing heaven when placed on each new pad for the first few weeks. If you can get some comfrey, I highly recommend it.

And both herbal baths and comfrey pads are safe on stitches, and will aid in your healing. Also, baby can soak in the tub with you and it will help the umbilicus heal faster. I also put some of the herbal bath water into my peri bottle before getting into the tub and use it to rinse off.

I love the earth mama bottom balm and spray. The balm is fabulous for hemorrhoids, and the spray was so wonderful for healing and comfort around the stitches. I also used the postpartum bath herbs. I never could tolerate sitz baths because I found them very uncomfortable to sit on, being so swollen and all. Instead, my midwives recommended tub baths in a clean bathtub, and I added the the bath herb tea to my tub bath. I bought all of those products again for this time, and then found out that there were more bath herbs in my homebirth kit.

I'm also a big believer in mama cloth for postpartum use. I'm normally a tampon girl, so I chose normal disposable stuff for my first birth. With my second, I went with hemp and wool, and it was SO much more comfy and cooler than disposables. I felt so much better so much faster. It was really surprising. I was also surprised at how much more quickly my stitches dissolved.

If you want to try it without a huge investment and committment, then one option is to buy diaper doublers. Last time, I bought leaf doublers from www.betterforbabies.com for the immediate postpartum period, and switched over to folded over hemp washcloths for later when things were lighter. I had a WAHM make me some simple wool liners, but I see that www.loveybums.com has wool doublers that would probably also serve the purpose perfectly, and they are also very inexpensive. The nice thing was that after I was done with it, I was able to use all my supplies for diapering DD. This time, I've made everything (from yummy organic cotton fleece and velour and wool), and that is another very economic option.

I think baths are one of those things that conservative OBs outlaw and homebirth midwives advocate.

Soak menstrual pads with witch hazel and freeze. They are like heaven on a sore perineum!

Ok ladies! Thank you so much!! I have a great stockpile of herbs to steep for my sitz baths, a big bottle of witch hazel, frozen pads in the freezer... I finally feel prepared.

Wonderful! May you have a tear-free birth! (by that I mean intact, the crying tears are actually helpful in labor most of the time)
