I say, if it is going to take a lot more hours of work, you've got to ask for a larger increase in pay.

Making up a deficit in skills--would that be on your own time? That doesn't sound good to me....

At the same time, if they are willing to hire you, hopefully, they'll be willing to help you grow into the position. Ask about what kind of on the job training you'll have if/when they offer you the job. If it were me, I would be clear at the beginning that you have a lot to learn, please be patient and you'll work hard (but not necessarily an absurd amount of hours).

I might suggest that long term gains like finishing your degree to get a higher step up in pay may outweigh a small raise with new stress.

Just my take.

I can't say that I would take it. Seems like a lot of stress and work for a job (not a career?) that you aren't sure you would like?

If you do take it, and you don't like it, can you revert to your old job?

This.

Also, I worked under an extremely difficult supervisor (that wasn't just my take on her, everyone asked me how I could work for such a difficult person) and it was miserable. And I was equipped to do the job.

I work for a VERY difficult supervisor right now (and like the PP said, it's not just my opinion, it is the very strong opinion of EVERYONE who works around her), and it makes things so much less fun.

My job is pretty easy, and the pay is decent, or else I'd be looking harder for something else.

If you don't get this particular promotion what is the chance of getting something similar with a different boss at a later time?

Is the pay increase something you NEED?

I'd be wary of it, unless the pay difference is enough to be worth it.

I got roped into taking on a more managerial position at my job because they needed somebody to do it and I was flattered that my boss wanted me to do it. But I never wanted to do that kind of work and I was right--I really don't like it and now I'm sort of stuck with it.
