An alternative to Wild Mexican Yam for Progesterone?

I believe I have a progesterone deficiency. I have most of the symptoms, although I haven't yet seen my doc about this. (I will soon.) My first child was born while I was still in my second trimester; with my second child, I took progesterone while pregnant, to prevent premature birth. The doc wanted me to get the progesterone shot, so I did, but had a BAD case of hives, so she put me on the suppository. I had no problems with that.

Trying to make myself feel better (about a year after my second was born), I bought some progesterone cream and applied it. Just when I was starting to feel better, I got hives. In subsequent months, I tried the cream again, always to break out in hives.

Is there an alternative to progesterone cream made with wild Mexican yams? I'm thinking there must have been a different form of progesterone in the suppositories I took...I'm hoping there is hope for me.

Again, I do plan to talk to my doc about this in the next month or two, but I thought you ladies might help me walk into her office informed about a possible alternative.

Thanks,
Kristina

I have had very low progesterone as well. I've had many hormone problems actually but I went on herbs for that. Progesterone herbs would be wild yam,Vitex and Dandelion WH. would all help. I took that in tincture form. I think herbs are so good for hormonal imbalances. Is there a herbalist in your area?

I have been reading on the Women to Women site about chasteberry also acting in the body to mimic progesterone. Not sure if it's a pill or cream. It is mentioned in this really awesome article about how herbs work in the body. Maybe there is something here that will help you...
Phytotherapy — the key to hormonal balance?

The chemical structure of the progesterone in natural progesterone cream (Wild Yam or Soy) is identical to the progesterone your body creates. Synthetic progesterone that is found in birth control and prescription hormone treatments is not identical to the body's own progesterone. You can read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" by Dr. John R. Lee for more information on this.

If you are allergic to the progesterone in natural progesterone cream, it's likely you are allergic to your body's own progesterone.

To determine if other women with unexplained recurrent anaphylaxis might have progesterone-induced anaphylaxis, four women experiencing recurrent anaphylaxis were recruited into a four month, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study of the effects of LHRH analog on
their anaphylaxis (2). All four women thought that their attacks occurred more frequently during the premenstrual portion of their menstrual cycle and
that the attacks during these times were more severe. In preliminary
screening of the patients, two of the women experienced systemic reactions after challenge with methylprogesterone and LHRH. Only one of the patients who experienced anaphylaxis after provocation had a positive skin test
response to progesterone. These two women improved during treatment with an LHRH analog, while the other two women did not. Urinary histamine levels, which had been elevated prior to treatment, were reduced in the two responsive women but not in the unresponsive women. Both women who responded, subsequently had an oophorectomy with complete remission of anaphylaxis.

Thanks for the ideas, ladies.

My hubby thinks I'm allergic to my body's progesterone, but I think it may be I'm allergic to some other aspect of the wild yam. At least, I certainly hope so! I see my GYN this coming week.
