MSM and detoxication factors

Thread Starter
My ND put me on MSM and Detoxication factors about 2 weeks ago. after a week of being on this I started getting a daily mild headache and was very tired by 4pm everyday ready for bed. I stopped it about 3 days ago and I feel a lot better. No more headache and Not as tired.

I'm trying to figure out If I should just start the MSM for now? Was I detoxing?
I know there are a few mamas on here that have used MSM so I'm just curious what your thoughts are on this?

I don't see any ingredients that are blatantly off, but I also don't know a lot about amino acids. The copper was the oddest mineral I saw, but if you've taken regular multis or prenatals that had copper and didn't react like that, then I'd assume that's not it.

Some people don't do well with supplemental sulfur compounds and MSM and NAC would fall into that category. If it makes you feel bad, I'd stop until I was really sure I knew what was going on--maybe something just fundamentally won't work for you.

Here's a page on high and low sulfur diets, it may be worthwhile to try a low sulfur diet for a week and see if you feel better than usual.

Thank you for the link Tanya. I've been off those supps for 4 days now and noticed a difference almost immediately when I stopped taking them. Do you have any good links on MSM? I don't know a whole lot about it.

Do you have/had mercury fillings in your teeth? MSM moves mercury around. Vit C, selenium and clay could help to bind it.

I have 1 mercury filling on the side of a molar, it's quite small actually. I'm wanting to get it removed. I'm guessing i"m needing a larger amount of Vit C and selenium then is in the detoxication factors.

Selenium-66 mcg
Vitamin C-167mg

If this did mobilize whatever for you, and you want to try to make a dent in that, you'd need a lot of vitamin C, oranges really don't have that much. For me, and I know I'm at the high end, I needed amounts in the 30,000 mg range each day for a while.

Long-term, keeping supplemental selenium in the 200mcg range is reasonable, but for dealing with other stresses, I think higher is reasonable.

By putting a dent in it should I continue the MSM and just add a lot of C and more selenium?

Well what about acerola powder? I have the NOW brand. I'm a little confused though because it says 1 tsp has 180 mg of vitamin C and 3.6g of acerola berry powder so how much Vit C is actually in 1 tsp????

Thx for your help ladies

At a minimum, I'd try to get back to feeling as good as you did before you ever tried the stuff, and then if you want, try it one more time. It may not work for you--ask your ND about the other people who've had poor reactions to it, see what he/she says. But some people do not do well on MSM, and I'd keep that as a possibility.

It sounds like 1 tsp has 180mg of vitamin C. I use sodium ascorbate because it's gentle on the stomach (vs ascorbic acid) and it's easier to get to the really high doses I need.

Also, you need molybdenum to be able to use the sulfur in MSM.

Hi Tanya, My Dr also recommended I keep my sel mcg to below 200/day. Is this the case when selenium deficiency is likely? I started increasing my sel when I noticed it was helping my IC pain. I don't understand precisely what biochem process is occurring when this happens but it seems I must have a deficiency. I do have thyroid issues, not sure about mercury, haven't had the merc fillings for at least 10 years now.

Any thoughts? Jane S. was kind enough to explain possible sulfur connection to me and also she is helping me with some questions on food chem sensitivities. I think I am more sensitive now because my body is dealing with so many microbial infections (Lyme -4 bands and 3 coinfections) the jury is still out on the candida. My OAT results showed only slightly elevated arabinose-no other fungal marker was high-and the oxalate scientist Susan Owens stated to me that arabinose is not indicative of yeast but rather oxalates. I am already doing LOD. Thanks so much
Kathleen
