Antibiotics in first tri?

I woke up late last night with a golf ball for a tonsil...fever, shakes and aches and pains. Today not only do I have an extremely swollen left side of my throat but I have an intense earache. Went to the doctor...said he didn't like to Rx antibiotics in the first tri...try to get by with Tylenol for next 24 hours...the tylenol stopped the really bad aches but I'm still uncomfortable. I'm dreading this not feeling better tomorrow. I'm scared to take the antibiotics but at the same time, I'm afraid of an infection running thru my body if this worse. What would you do? Just as a side note....I'm super prone to sore throat due to my extremely large tonsils which should have been removed as a child...this is my 3rd throat infection since Oct. They don't seem to resolve themselves without antibiotics...I'm in a lot of pain!

I'm on penicillin right now for a sinus infection, and I'm 11 weeks. There are many antibiotics safe during pregnancy, for use in every trimester. Tylenol only goes so far, I know!! I'd try and get a prescription if you aren't feeling better soon.

I was just diagnosed with strep throat, I wasn't sure if I was pregnant or not and when I told the doctor, he said penicillin would be fine if I was.

I think I'm going to have mine out, too. I got amoxicillin last week and everyone said it was fine during pregnancy (midwife, doctor, Dr. Google.) And my tonsils shrank and the white spots disappeared!

Did he diagnose/culture what you had? it might not be something you need antibiotics for anyways! try some natural remedies, I have not taken antibiotics in nearly 20 years and I have managed to fight off all kinds of things that I would have taken them for in the past! Throat infections, ear infections, UTI's etc are often quite treatable without antibiotics. And now I rarely even have things that get that far! Vit D, Vit C, Zinc, hot clear liquids constantly, rest, cold packs, hot packs, netti pot, echanacea, hydrogen peroxide, salt gargle, tea trea oil, and the list can go on... I find that a dedicated couple of days of healing will usually get rid of anything or prevent it from getting too bad and allowing the body to fight!
Some doctors say that it's bad to have tonsils out, ditto to appendix, we might need these things for more than we realize. Also fevers, they do serve a purpose as long as they don't get too high.
Just something to consider!

If you have never had this, you cannot understand how awfully painful it is, and it doesn't go away naturally. Trust me, I've tried all the natural stuff, waiting weeks, and it doesn't go away. It lives in your tonsils and keeps coming back. Plus, for me, it will cause a 101+ fever, which is not safe in pregnancy. And then there's the fact that you can't swallow anything, not even water. It can't be echinacea'd away.

Personally, I have had things that sound like this- I've been officially diagnosed with mumps 2x, I've had never ending strep and bronchitis for years, and I've lost half my hearing due to ear infections in my late teens. All of this while religiously following doctor's orders. Two or three runs of antibiotics didn't save my hearing and in fact made me sicker and sicker until I found out I couldn't tolerate antibiotics any more. Evil oral thrush, yeast growths on my skin, and rashes, hives and other antibiotic allergies started beyond just the original infections continuing on and repeating. IME (not that it will suit everybody) my health has improved SO MUCH since I've started following alternative paths and I wasn't sure if that's something the OP has tried yet
