A stunning new Justice Department special report, released just this month, underscores how widespread rape is in youth correctional facilities. It found that almost one youth in eight reported being sexually assaulted while behind bars in the last year.

That means that a child in custody is about twice as likely to be raped as an adult behind bars, based on similar surveys of adult prisoners.

Surprisingly, the new survey suggests that the biggest predators are not other inmates but prison staff — and female staff members offend as much as the males do.

I don't have anything specific to say about this, other than it's horrifying. I've taken an interest in the criminalization of children, so I expect to post more articles about youth in the justice system, or being treated as though they belong there, as they capture my attention. Innocent or guilty, kids don't deserve this kind of treatment.

That is horrifying.

I wish I was surprised.

Statistically, I wonder if a child is safer in an adult prison (with it's lower rate of *reported* sexual assault) or in juvinille detention (with it's smaller/younger inmate population. I am always shocked by the number of people who seem to consider juvinille sentances to, somehow, be "getting off"/ getting away with something.

Pitiful that this needs to be stated, and that it is insightful or new.

If we want to rehabilitate young offenders and help them get their lives in order, a starting point is to end the criminal abuse of them.
