The Back-Up Plan Movie Trailer

I don't know if anyone else has already posted about this, but has anyone seen the trailer for Jennifer Lopez's new movie The Back Up Plan? It depicts a water birth, but just in this silly, comedic way that to be honest, really annoyed me. I don't know if I am just overreacting or if anyone else found it to be stupid as well.

I will link the trailer here, and the homebirth scene starts around the 2 min, 11 second mark.

I hadn't heard of this movie until you posted it but I must agree, the movie looks obnoxious. Not that I see many movies, but this is one that I'll pass up.

argh, it's just annoying.
I've been annoyed already this weekend, because I came across some stupid sitcom when a woman was screaming in a hospital to the giggles of a "live studio audience" and now this. bleh. why do we consider childbirth and women birthing to be a joke in western society? are we just so scared of it?

I was annoyed too. It's frustrating to see laboring women portrayed so disrespectfully, especially in this case with the implication that because it's a homebirth the woman is more crazy and gross.

I guess I should hold final judgment until seeing these clips in context, but check out this trailer:

After witnessing the homebirth, Lopez's character says, "ours won't be like that" and her co-star says, "for starters, you wax."

Lovely.

I found it more than just bleh. Maybe I'm being oversensitive, but the depiction seemed so exaggerated (the facial contortions of the woman, her writhing, her over-the-top screams) that it was mocking, even dehumanizing. Even laying aside how they knocked homebirth, I thought it was one of the worst depictions of a laboring woman I'd seen.

Maybe that was taken out of context and the movie as a whole isn't so bad, but I doubt it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt it was obnoxious. I do admit I thought it was pretty funny when she fell into the tub though, but that's it. My mom (who supports my plans to home water birth, but was before the era of homebirth in the media) thought it was hilarious

I don't have children yet (wanting but waiting and all that fun stuff), but I plan on having a waterbirth. All of the waterbirths I have seen have been so peaceful, but granted those are just the ones I have watched online that other mothers choose to share, and the good ol' film The Business of Being Born.

I just would really hate for people to think that waterbirth looked like that in the majority of cases, when I really don't believe it does.

I saw it today, and really liked it. The way the whole water birth scene played out was pretty hysterical

I was annoyed when I saw the trailer. I've been present at a home birth and while it wasn't a water birth, it was actually more peaceful than any hospital births I've seen and nothing like they depicted.
