Teens and pets

We have family staying with us right now, and they have a little shih tzu dog. I notice how much it softens DSD when the dog comes along with us in the car, or even just simply in the room.

Anyone notices the same?

Oh, absolutely. My 16yo DS usually acts so tough and cool. But he absolutely adores his cat, always giving her treats and baby talking to her and he's got a million pictures of her on his cell phone. You'd think she was his kid. I love it!

animals and babies. Once responsibility sets in (walking, cleaning after, etc. when they are not feeling like it) the softness can fade. Now my dd screams at the dog and isn't allowed to walk him anymore because she kicked him.

The baby still retains her favor as long as I'm close to take him when shes done. Last night she tried to take a bath with him and even though it didn't work out that well it was really sweet.

Yes! That's why they do so many programs with therapy dogs and kids, heck that's why they do programs for prison inmates with dogs. It gives them someone that accepts them unconditionally, that they can love, and not worry about not looking cool around. There is a lot of information out there about this!

DD (13 y.o.) enjoys watching a t.v. program about prison inmates who take rescued dogs (from shelters I think), re-train them and then the dogs are given to new owners. I think it's on Discovery Channel. It really seems like a good concept - the inmates relate so well to the dogs and work so hard to help them.

DD begged us for a dog, and we got a puppy last month. It's been wonderful to watch her take on the responsibility. She's up early in the morning to walk and feed him before school. She's even cleaned up her room, because the puppy will chew on anything left on the floor.

There are times when she gets a little aggravated - but even then, it's good to see her develop patience and persistence while she's training him. I think they are training each other, lol!

Horses are used in therapy, too!!!

Animals are so great for kids (and adults, too).
