Snaps? How do you set them?

So I think I want to start using snaps on some of the clothes I'm making dd. I went looking on Joanns.com but the only device for setting snaps (the Dritz Snap Pliers) had tons of horrible reviews.

I googled and found The Snap Source and their Snap setter. But there are no reviews on how it works.

So how do you set snaps and what would you recommend?

TIA

I use the SnapSource snapsetter and have used it for about 5 years.

The setter is in three parts the bottom one is where you put the prong bit of the snap, then you lay the fabric on top then the middle part which has a hole in it to place the socket or knobble bit of the snap. Then you put the top piece on and hit the lot with a hammer.

It takes a few goes to get it and it isn't very fast but the snaps last well through washes and use. If you look at the price of resin snap setters they are a lot more expensive - into the $100s so I am happy with this little one and metal snaps.

You can buy a snap pliers and plastic snaps from Kamsnaps.com or the notionsupply yahoo group. The notionsupply group is cheaper, but it takes longer to get to you.

Oh, and the snap pliers from the notionsupply group are $20 plus shipping.

Thanks ladies!

Mamapixie, do you have the snap pliers for the plastic snaps and if you do, do you like them?

I have a snap press for setting metal and KAM snaps and it is awesome. 'Tis an investment, though, so if you are interested in setting KAM snaps cheaply I would definitely recommend the snap pliers from Notionsupply. Several people on another board I read use them for making diapers and like them for the low cost. I've ordered snaps from Serena of Notionsupply before and she is very nice, ships very quickly. She is in China, though I've gotten my orders from her in about a week or so and I live in Alaska.

Before I got my snap press, I had one of those plastic thingies for metal snaps that you hit with a hammer. I never got it to work right for clothing snaps and just ended up frustrated. I could never get the pieces to line up right and ended up smashing the prongs. It could be because I was trying to apply snaps through several layers of binding for onesies. Once I got the press though, applying snaps was like cutting butter and no worrying that the pieces aren't just right.

I do have the snap pliers(bought secondhand, but they originally came from the yahoo group) I however do not have any snaps yet(they are on their way here). Everything I've read about them has been positive though, as far as light snapping. If you do plan on doing a lot of snap setting, then a snap press may be better.
