Good Sleeper....or Too Good??

My son is 13 months. He goes to bed normally just after 8pm and sometimes as late as 9pm. He usually only wakes once for a feeding around 7am and then sleeps til around 10 or 11. He's up for about 2.5 hours and then sleeps for another 3-4 hours for his nap.

While he's awake, he's super active and hyper. He's developmentally normal on all accounts that I can see and is an extremely happy baby. But is he sleeping too much? Is this even something to be concerned about? I just wonder if he's missing out on precious learning and experiencing time... This isn't a phase, but has been pretty consistent for a while now, months.

Thoughts anyone?

Wow! I thought I had a good sleeper. My 14mo DD goes to bed around 6:00 pm and wakes up at 8:00 am. Not a peep imbetween. She usually takes a 1 hour nap around 12:00.
I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure your LO has a lot of developmental things taking place while he's sleeping :]

Wow. I shouldn't have even opened this thread.

Just nice to see that there are kids at the other end of the spectrum.. that DO sleep. Ahh.. that would be nice.

I wouldn't think it would be cause for concern, unless something else is developmentally off.

I just reread your post.. it looks like he is only awake 6-8 hours a day, is that right? hm.. have you talked with our ped about this?

That's about right, Lady--and that's my concern... Seems like so little time awake... I haven't asked the ped yet, but I am seeing him this Friday and will bring it up.

BTW--there is still hope for your LO... Until my son was about 8 months, he was up every hour to eat every night and it was the hugest struggle to get him to sleep at night or for his naps (which were always very short). Now he doesn't even really need a routine as long as he has a full belly and it's around nap/bed time, you just put him in his bed, he grabs his blankie and he lays himself down! He can go straight from active play to that! So maybe you don't want yours to sleep as much as mine, but there is hope for a good sleeper someday!

My daughter at that age slept 15 hours a day...12 at night and a 3 hour nap. Some kids just need more sleep. I never saw it as an issue and it never affected her negatively.
Until age 2 she still slept 13 hours a day...10 at night and a 3 hour nap.
Now at 2 1/2 she sleeps 10 hours at night and occasionally takes a 1-2 hour nap.

DS is 25 months and sleeps 12 hours at night. During the week he takes a 1.5-2 hour nap at school, but on the weekends he can sleep 3 hours easily. So that's about 15 hours of sleep when he sticks to his own body clock. What potentially concerns me about him isn't that he sleeps too much, but that he is always complaining of being tired and saying he wants to take a nap. He is very active and is developing leaps and bounds so I assume that's why he feels tired, but then I wonder how many just turned 2 year olds tell their parents, "Mommy, I tired. I need to take a nap."

Wow, Kitty Kat! That is something. Have you asked a ped about it?

At that age my kids slept 16 hours a day ~ DS 7-7 with 2 2 hour naps, and DD 7-8 with a 3 hour nap. My son will be 3 in two weeks and STILL takes a three hour nap, DD will be two in two months and still sleeps 16 hours a day! They are just super active while awake and also on the big side, I figure that all that playing and growing just wears them out.

If you are concerned, ask your pedi, but as long as the child is hitting milestones, active when awake etc I would (generally) say you just lucked out with a great sleeper!
